  • Lesnes Abbey Woods is a large area of open space and natural woodland.
  • It is bounded by Abbey Road in the North, Woolwich Road to the South, New Road to the West and Heron Hill to the East.
  • Within the park are the 12th century ruins of Lesnes Abbey and the historic Mulberry Tree.
  • There is also a fossil bed within the wood where the public are allowed to dig.
  • The Green Chain Walk route passes through the park.
  • The newly opened (2016) Lesnes Lodge contains community rooms that are available for hire for talks, classes and private events.
  • A children's nursery will also be based there.
  • The building also houses a refreshment kiosk with outside seating and public toilets.
  • The park and woodlands are in a naturally hilly area, with some long and steep slopes which may be challenging to some visitors.
  • The most accessible route into the park is from New Road, where there are Blue Badge parking bays, the widest kissing gate and the easiest gradients on the paths towards the Lodge and ruins.

Standard Entrance Barriers

• Standard access control barriers are used at all the entrances into the park from Abbey Road, the access Bridge and also Woolwich Road. They are also used at the access points into the woodland areas from the southern sections of New Road and Heron Hill.
• The barriers are intended to permit access for pedestrians, cycles, wheelchair users and pushchairs but prevent access by motorbikes.
• Wheelchair and pushchair users follow the same route past a gate which swings both ways into an enclosure which they then must reverse out of.
• There are minor variations between the gates, but the enclosure is typically 120cm deep and a maximum of 110cm wide.
• The clear opening width is around 95cm.
• There are horizontal bars above the space which are intended to be above the head-height of wheelchair users.
• The bars are around 132cm and 138cm high.
• The enclosed space may be insufficient for electric mobility scooters or taller wheelchairs.
• To the side of the kissing gate is an open access for other pedestrians, around 55cm wide, and a pinch point for cycles to be passed through.
