Summary
- The following information describes the route from the Tower Block main entrance to seminar rooms BR1-01 to BR1-09.
- The route takes the main lifts to the first floor, and then proceeds through the Red Zone to reach the Green Zone via platform lift.
- The approximate distance of the route is 270m.
- The type of flooring along the route is mostly vinyl/laminate with a section of carpet tiles.
- There is some flooring which is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- There is some flooring which includes patterns or colours which could be confusing or look like steps or holes to some people.
- While many doors are permanently held open, there are doors in corridors which must be opened manually.
- Potential hazards along the route include ramps/slopes and corridor obstacles such as fire extinguishers and refuse bins.
- There are 2 accessible toilets plus female and male standard toilets along the route.
- There is seating with armrests at two locations along the route.

- This entrance gives access to the Tower Building - Blue Zone ground floor and main reception.
- The entrance area/door is not clearly signed.
- This entrance is signed with 'London Metropolitan University'.
- There is step-free access at this entrance.
- There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.
- There is a dark mat or floor marking at this entrance that might be perceived as a hole.
- The entrance door(s) does not/do not contrast visually with its immediate surroundings.
- There is not a bell/buzzer.
- There is an intercom.
- The height of the intercom is 119cm (3ft 11in).
- A key card is required for access at this entrance.
- The height of the key card reader is 104cm.
- The main door(s) open(s) automatically (away from you).
- The door(s) is/are single width.
- The width of the door opening is 100cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance, with a height of 2cm or below.
- There is also a revolving door next to this one.
- There are manual revolving doors on each side of the automatic single door.
The doors to the left have a steep slope in front of them (shown in photograph 5).
Those to the right have a slight ramp in front (photograph 6), but these were not in use at the time of survey.
The card reader to exit the building is 115cm high (shown in photograph 7).
Tower Block Main Entrance to Security Barriers
- Enter through the single, automatic door at the front of the Tower Block.
- The width of the door is 100cm.
- The automatic door opens away from you.
- The height of the bell buzzer is 119cm and the height of the card reader is 104cm.
- There is a slight slope in front of the entrance.
- To the far right of the security barriers is the accessible security barrier.
- The width of the security barrier is 94cm and the card reader height is 100cm.
- There is a slight slope in front of the security barrier.
- The flooring is tiled and has a very shiny finish which could cause issues with glare or be perceived as slippery.
- The lighting level is good.
Security Barriers to Tower Block First Floor
- Enter through the security barrier and take a right through the set of manual, double doors that are permanently held open.
- The width of the doors is 174cm.
- Clear overhead signage is provided above the doors.
- Take one of the lifts to the first floor.
- On exiting the lift turn left and head through the single manual door with an open extension leaf to exit the lift lobby.
- The width of the single door with an open extension leaf is 135cm.
- The flooring is tiled, vinyl/laminate and has a very shiny finish which could cause issues with glare or be perceived as slippery.
- The lighting level is moderate to good.
Lift (Main Lifts A-C)
- The lift is located on the main corridor, next to reception.
- Signs indicating the location of the lift are clearly visible from the entrance.
- The lift is approximately 12m (13yd 4in) from the main entrance.
- The lift is a standard lift.
- A member of staff does not need to be notified for use of the lift.
- The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
- There are manual, heavy, double doors to access the lift lobby from the first floor upwards.
- Clear signs indicating the facilities on each floor are provided on lift lobby landings.
- There is a clear level manoeuvring space of 150cm × 150cm in front of the lift.
- Lift doors do not contrast visually with lift lobby walls.
- The external controls for the lift are within 90cm - 110cm from the floor.
- The colour contrast between the external lift controls and the control plate is high.
- The colour contrast between the external lift control plate and the wall is high.
- The clear door width is 88cm (2ft 11in).
- The dimensions of the lift are 177cm x 102cm (5ft 10in x 3ft 4in).
- There are not separate entry and exit doors in the lift.
- There is a mirror to aid reversing out of the lift.
- There is not a list of floor services available within the lift.
- The lift does have a visual floor indicator.
- The lift does have an audible announcer.
- The internal controls for the lift are not within 90cm - 120cm from the floor.
- The internal controls range from 90cm to 138cm from the floor.
- There is not a hearing loop system.
- The lift does have Braille markings.
- The lift does have tactile markings.
- The lighting levels in the lift are good.

- The only controls available within the lifts are the door open/close button and the emergency call button.
The lift floor selection buttons are located on the wall between the 3 lifts which are labelled A, B and C (photograph 6)

Other Floors (The Tower - Main Stairs - Stairwell 2)

Stairs

- Stairs can be used to access other floors.
- The stairs are located opposite the main lifts on the ground floor main corridor.
- The stairs are approximately 15m from the main entrance.
- Signs indicating the location of the stairs are clearly visible from the entrance.
- There are manual, heavy, double doors to enter and exit the stairwell on all floors.
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
- There are 15+ steps between floors.
- The height of the step(s) is/are between the recommended 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the step(s) is/are 17cm.
- The depth of the step(s) is/are not between the recommended 30cm and 45cm.
- The steps are not clearly marked.
- There is a/are handrail(s) at the step(s).
- The steps have a handrail on both sides.
- Handrails are not at the recommended height (90cm-100cm).

Main Lifts to Red Zone Entrance
- This part of the route is approximately 50m long.
- Turning left out of the lift, exit the lift lobby through the single door with a locked extension leaf.
- The door opens towards you (pull) and the opening is 86cm wide and the door may be difficult to open.
- Turn immediately left and left again through 2 sets of double doors which are permanently held open.
- The open door widths are 110cm and 151cm respectively.
- The flooring here is vinyl and is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- The route opens out into a breakout space through a wide opening.
- The flooring in this area is carpet tiles and there is some flooring which includes patterns or colours which could be confusing or look like steps or holes to some people.
- There is seating with armrests, armchairs and sofas available within the breakout space.
- Heading ahead and then right for 23m the route continues through either of 2 adjacent single doors with locked extension leafs, which are permanently held open and the open door widths here are both 78cm.
- There is floor level and overhead signage here indicating Red, Green and Yellow Zones, and Roding Building.
- Continuing 4m directly ahead through a single door with an open extension leaf which is permanently held open, there is a 10m long corridor on a slope with a slight incline and this is the entrance to the Red Zone.
Entrance (Red Zone - Floor 1 Entrance from The Bloomberg Suite)

Red Zone Entrance to Platform Lift Q
- This part of the route is approximately 115m long.
- There is floor and wall directional signage at regular intervals along the route.
- Continuing 4m straight ahead from the Red Zone entrance, there is a 114cm wide access point that leads into a long corridor.
- The flooring here is vinyl and shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- Follow the corridor straight ahead for approximately 40m through 2 sets of double doors which are permanently held open.
- There are obstacles to either side of the corridor such as fire extinguishers and refuse bins, but these do not restrict access.
- At the end of the corridor, turn right through a set of double doors which are permanently held open.
- After 23m there is are accessible, female and male standard toilets and a water fountain on the left, after which the corridor takes a 45 degree left-hand turn.
- Red Zone Stair 6 is on the right.
- After a further 10m the corridor takes a 45 degree right-hand turn through a set of double doors which are permanently held open.
- After approximately 10m on the right is the access corridor for Student Services, plus link bridges to the Blue and Yellow Zones.
- Continue for 23m straight past the access corridor through 2 sets of double doors which are permanently held open.
- On the left-hand side of the corridor is a platform lift which may be used to overcome 7 medium height steps with handrails on both sides.
- The stairs can be accessed through a set of doors on the left 6m after the platform lift.
Lift (Green Zone - Floor 1 - Platform Lift Q)
- The lift is located just beyond the first floor Green Zone entrance.
- Signs indicating the location of the lift are not available from the entrance.
- The lift is approximately 17m (18yd 1ft) from the Courtyard Entrance 8 lift.
- The lift is a platform lift.
- A member of staff does not need to be notified for use of the lift.
- The platform lift accesses a small level change.
- The weight limit for the lift is 500kg.
- Clear signs indicating the facilities on each floor are not provided on lift lobby landings.
- There is a clear level manoeuvring space of 150cm × 150cm in front of the lift.
- Lift doors do contrast visually with lift lobby walls.
- The external controls for the lift are within 90cm - 110cm from the floor.
- The colour contrast between the external lift controls and the control plate is low.
- The colour contrast between the external lift control plate and the wall is low.
- The clear door width is 88cm (2ft 11in).

Green Zone Floor 1 to BR1-01 to BR1-09
- This part if the route is approximately 70m long.
- There is overhead and wall directional signage at regular intervals along the route.
- There are accessible and female standard toilets at the start of this part of the route.
- At the bottom of the slope turn right past the toilets and continue along the main corridor.
- Along the corridor are three sets of double doors that are permanently held open.
- The flooring is vinyl/laminate and there is some flooring which is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- At the end of the corridor there is a 93cm wide ramp on a slight incline, with a handrail on the left hand side.
- There is a small lip at the base of the ramp.
- There is a single, manual door at the top of the ramp with a width of 85cm.
- Enter through the door, turn left, and then right, and then follow the corridor for approximately 40m all the way to the end.
- After approximately 26m there is a 137cm wide downward slope on a slight incline.
- There is a set of manual, double doors that are permanently held open halfway down the slope and the width of the doors is 126cm.
- Continue down the slope and the BR1-01 to BR1-09 breakout area is located ahead and to the right.
- The lighting levels here are moderate to good.
