Introduction

  • This route describes how to get from the Marshall Building to the Old Building.
  • The distance is approximately 0.1 mile and it includes a steep ramp or stairs, with the surfaces being either tarmac or block paving. There is one road that needs to be crossed, Portugal Street, whilst John Watkin’s Plaza can get particularly busy with pedestrians or people relaxing around the café area.

Exit the Marshall Building

  • Exit the Marshall Building from the Portugal Street entrance, closest to the main reception desk.
  • Walk directly ahead for approximately 8m to the dropped kerb onto Portugal Street. John Watkin's Plaza is on the other side.
  • The pavement outside the exit is block paved and level.

Crossing across Portugal Street

  • There are dropped kerbs without tactile paving on both sides of the tarmac road. The kerbs are therefore then level with the road.
  • There are slight slopes down to the road on both sides.
  • The slope up onto John Watkins Plaza is tarmac.
  • Pedestrians should take care when crossing as there are no signals/ road markings for the crossing.

John Watkin's Plaza to the Old Building

  • Once across Portugal Street, head straight forward into the Plaza past the Library on the left, as shown in photograph 2.
  • There is a slight slope to the block paved area, with bicycle racks, site map, benches 47cm high and planters to the sides.
  • Just past the Library and to the right of the Pizza Café seating area (photograph 6), there is a ramp down to the lower level of the plaza.
  • The ramp is steep, approximately 10m long and has handrails on both sides. It is shown in photographs 7-9.
  • There are 2 bollards at the bottom of the ramp with visual identification bands. They do not, however, contrast visually with the paving. They have a minimum width of 122cm.
  • There are 2 sets of unmarked steps to the left of the ramp in the café area which are bypassed by the ramp. They are shown in photographs 10 and 11.
  • Once past the ramp, continue straight ahead, along the block paved path which is 197cm wide, as shown in photograph 12.
  • Head directly forward through the plaza for 65m. There is wall-mounted signage indicating where the Old Building entrance is.
  • There are planters to one side and benches 45cm high to the right side.

Old Building Entrance

  • There is a ramped entrance to the old building which runs along the front right hand side of the building.
  • The ramp is 155cm wide and has a slight gradient. It has handrails on both sides.
  • There are 3 or 4 bollards with a minimum width of 106cm past the ramp. These are passed when using the stepped access to Old Building.
  • The 4 steps have handrails on both sides with tactile paving at the top and bottom.
