Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • Wolfson Building has three entrances.
    All three entrances provide step-free access to the ground floor.
    There is a push pad activated, single automatic door at the rear entrance.
    The side entrance has double automatic doors and the front entrance has double manual doors.
  • The entrances are signed as Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access to each part of the building, however in order to gain step-free level access to the ground floor of the TW Building you must enter via the side entrance.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are resting areas in some corridor and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors in some corridor and lobby areas.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 4 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on each floor next to the lift, and on the ground floor ahead as you enter via the side entrance.
    • All toilets with adaptations have a right hand transfer space.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on each floor, off the main corridor.

Entrance (Rear)

  • This entrance is located at the rear of the building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 84cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • There is a push pad at a height of 77cm.
  • The width of the opening is 93cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 105cm.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located in the middle of the building.
  • The distance from the rear entrance is 7m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and manual doors.
  • The ground, first and second floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have a medium visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 80cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 107cm (width) x 136cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a low visual contrast.
  • The majority of the internal controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Internally the lift has: a mirror to aid reversing, a visual floor indicator and an audible announcer.
  • Lighting levels were low at the time of the survey.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the left as you enter via the front entrance.
  • The ground, first and second floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.

Reception

  • The reception is located on the first floor, to the right as you exit the lift.
  • The distance from the lift is 5m.
  • The most accessible route to reception has doors permanently held open.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 124cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 75cm.
  • The reception has patterned/distracting backgrounds.

  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.

Toilet with Adaptations (First Floor - Right Hand Transfer)

    • There is a lateral transfer space to the right as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
    • The lateral transfer space is 125cm (from the side of the toilet pan).
    • There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.
