Hikes and Trails (Abinger Roughs Nature Trail)

  • The walk is approximately 2 miles.
  • Start the walk by heading out of the car park, through the gap in the fence opposite the notice board. Look out for the green nature trail marker post. Walk past the natural play area and then follow the path as it bends round to the right and begins to descend. Continue to walk down the slope and down to a small copse at a low point reached over a trackway. Follow the left-hand path up the hill and then round to the left. You'll go through some holly and then come out into an open glade. Walk to the edge of the glade and a junction of paths. Take the second fork to the left along an undulating path. Follow the waymarkers down the slope and back into the woodland. You'll soon come to a large area of rhododendrons. Turn left and continue along the path, eventually leaving the woodland. As you walk out of the woodland you will see the Wilberforce memorial and also an old barn on your left hand side. From here, turn right up the hill to return to the car park.

Go through the gate and along the track with a field to your right and woods to your left; the track falls slightly then swings hard right – here you leave the track and take the path through another gate that goes straight on across a field with a hedge to your left and a fence to your right. Head to the far end of the field and walk straight across Hackhurst Lane. Continue along the narrow path which leads past a cottage on your left and into Piney Copse. Follow the path through the copse, and you will shortly reach the end of the walk at Beggar's Lane. To return to Abinger Roughs, retrace your steps.
