Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys and sunglasses.
  • You can borrow these from the Visitor Reception Building. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: off-road/all-terrain mobility scooters and trampers. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • The accessible visitor shuttle bus operates from the rear of the Visitor Reception Building.

Route to (Belton House)

  • The house is on the left hand side of the grounds as you exit the Visitor Reception Building.
    The West Courtyard entrance can be reached from the grounds via the gravel and grass of the Oval at the front of the building, or via the cobbled driveway.
  • The route to the area is step-free level.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel, cobbles and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.

Entrance (West Courtyard Entrance)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the left hand side of the building, in the West Courtyard.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 3 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 65cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors (with one door locked) which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 67cm.
  • There are 8 steps beyond the entrance, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There is a stair climber to overcome the steps.

Entrance (South Entrance)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house, overlooking the Oval and the parkland.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 10+ steps, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 131cm.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 80 minutes.
  • There is stepped access along the tour route.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via a virtual tour and an information booklet.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets and Braille.
  • Floor plans/maps are available for the tour route.
  • There are chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven floorboards.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are low along parts of the tour route.

Stairs

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
  • There are 15 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the right going up.
  • There is a similar, but narrower and less well lit, staircase to come back down from the first floor.
    Visitors with limited mobility are advised to use the main stairs to return to the ground floor.

Exit

  • The exit is located at the rear left of the house.
  • There is not step-free access at the exit.
  • There are 10+ steps, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 98cm.
  • Visitors with limited mobility can use the West Courtyard entrance and stair climber to exit the house.
