Equipment and Resources to Borrow (Westgate)

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, soft toy and accessible maps.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: trampers and mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (Fountains Abbey from Westgate Visitor Centre)

  • From the visitor centre, proceed straight ahead along the pathway, following signs for the abbey.
    At the end of the pathway cross the grass to the abbey entrance.
    The grass may become difficult for wheelchair and mobility scooter users to cross when wet.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and muddy.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • Wheelchair users are to follow the route listed in the accessible map provided at the reception point.

Entrance (The Nave)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the abbey.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is an opening without doors.
  • The width of the opening is 230cm.
  • There is a slight ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the entrance, with no handrails.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided and volunteers/staff are not available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via a virtual tour.
  • Different tour types are available which may vary the tour time and route.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets and audio description.
  • Floor plans/maps are available for the tour route.
  • The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • There are bench seats at regular intervals along the tour.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven paving/tiles, compacted earth paths and gravel.
  • Lighting levels are varied throughout the tour route.

    The route advised by the tour guide was from the Cellarium entrance and exiting at The Nave entrance.

Exit (Cellarium)

  • The exit is located at the front of the abbey.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the exit.
  • The slight slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is an opening without doors.
  • The width of the opening is 130cm.
