Parking (Main Parking)

  • This site has a car park.
  • This is an open air car park with a compacted gravel surface.
  • Parking is free for all users.
  • Maps and information boards are not available.
  • There are no Blue Badge parking bays available.
  • Obstacles from the car park include: slopes/ramps.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • There is 1 electric vehicle charging point.
  • There is no electric vehicle charging point designated for Blue Badge holders.
  • There is not a designated drop-off point.
  • The electric vehicle charging points are free of charge. Visitors should simply plug their vehicle in and the charging will start.

Parking (Blue Badge Parking)

  • This site has a car park.
  • This is an open air car park with a compacted earth surface.
  • Parking is free for all users.
  • Maps and information boards are not available.
  • There are 4 Blue Badge parking bays.
  • There is no hatched zone.
  • The nearest Blue Badge bay is 193m from the shop.
  • Obstacles from the car park include: slopes/ramps and uneven surfaces.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • There is no electric vehicle charging point designated for Blue Badge holders.
  • There is not a designated drop-off point.
  • None of the of the Blue Bays are marked. Visitors are encouraged to stop at the main car park first to collect tickets from the ticket office before driving up to park in the designated area. Alternatively, tickets can also be collected from the courtyard shop. A shuttle vehicle is available to take visitors from the Blue Badge parking area to the courtyard and the garden coffee shop. Subject to volunteer availability, the vehicle operates every day from 11am – 4:30pm from April to September.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: fidget toys.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Visitor Reception (For Main Car Park)

  • Access into the area is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 80cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • All flooring is smooth and even.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 90cm.
  • There is a low level section at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There are tables and chairs with armrests available in the visitor reception.
  • Services/facilities available include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.
  • There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • The exit door is manual, permanently held open and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the exit door opening is 80cm.

Toilet with Adaptations (Approach to Courtyard - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located along a sloped pathway to the right of the driveway into the castle courtyard.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 181m from the Blue Badge parking.
  • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 80cm.
  • The door has a sliding bolt lock.
  • Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 178cm x 172cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 116cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a pull chain flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and a vertical rail on the left side of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder and wash basin.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: soap dispenser and hand dryer.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 49cm.

  • The height of the wash basin is 71cm.
