Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass, accessible maps and sensory maps.

Route to (the Parkland)

  • Cross the car park, heading away from the Visitor Centre, and the main access point to the parkland is ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located across the car park and access road, opposite the Visitor Centre.
  • Access into the area is via a steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a kissing gate at the surveyed access point.
  • The gate is not self-closing.
  • The gate has a latch lock.
  • The width of the gap is 90cm.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: parkland.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass, compact earth and uncompacted earth.
  • Footpaths are not available in all of the outdoor spaces.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas .
  • The parkland has uneven ground throughout.
    All access points to the parkland lead immediately to moderate hills.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have kissing gates which may create obstacles for some users.

Picnic Area (By Car Park)

  • The following information describes the picnic area located opposite the Visitor Centre, across the car park and access road.
  • Access into the area is via a steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 62cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 71cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to compacted earth and grass.

Picnic Area (Skyglade)

  • The following information describes the picnic area located to the south of the Parkland, along the Longer Walk.
  • Access into the area is via a steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 77cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass.

Hikes and Trails (Short Walk)

  • The walk is approximately 1 mile.
  • Enter the Parkland via the main access point opposite the Visitor Centre.
    Head to the left up the hill and pass through a kissing gate.
    Continue through another kissing gate, and down the hill, turning to the right before entering Russell's Wood.
    Head back up the hill, then down to the access point once more.
  • The walk is open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: grass.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients and very uneven surfaces.
  • These are found in the following areas: There is uneven ground throughout the walk.
  • There are no alternative routes to avoid these areas.
  • The route is not clearly signposted.
  • The route has information boards with large maps, handheld maps and online maps.
  • Seating is available on the route.
  • There are no toilet facilities along the route.
