Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a mountain trike and manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass, activity sheets, soft toy, torch, communication cards and accessible maps.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a tramper and mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (Courtyard Café and Toilets)

  • From the Visitor Reception follow the path. The path veers to the left and the shops are then to the left.
    Go past the shops and turn left and the courtyard entrance is to the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Toilet with Adaptations (Café Courtyard - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located in the toilet block facing the courtyard café entrance.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 10m from the courtyard entrance.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 82cm.
  • The door has a locking handle (with a RADAR key to access).
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 141cm x 175cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 80cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.

  • The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 55cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • Lighting levels are low.
  • There are hand dryers.

Parent and Baby Room / Baby Feeding Room (Café Courtyard)

  • There is step-free level access into the room.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 74cm.
  • The height of the baby change table is 94cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • There is no seating available in the room.
  • Waste bins include: a nappy bin.

Entrance (Courtyard)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the right of the courtyard.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 162cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm
  • There is an alternative entrance to the left just before the shops. It is 234cm wide and has a steep slope.

Entrance (Courtyard Café)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the café.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The steep slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 88cm.
  • There are 2 similar single doors at this entrance.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, takeaway cutlery, a portable card machine for payment and large-handled mugs.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
  • The counter is 90cm high.
  • There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The seating area does not have: any seating available.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
  • The majority of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located in the courtyard area.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There are tables and picnic tables.
  • Some chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 64cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 72cm.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 72cm.
  • The surface height of the highest table is 76cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs and some of the tables.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • All of the surface in the picnic area is smooth and even.
