Northern Design Centre to Gateshead College Bus Stop

  • On exiting the Northern Design Centre turn left and follow the access road out of the car park.
  • There is a dropped kerb into the car park.
  • The surface of the car park is block paved.
  • There is an easy gradient in the car park.
  • There is a dropped kerb to join the footpath just before the car park exit.
  • The dropped kerbs do not have tactile paving.
  • As you exit the car park onto the access road follow the footpath beside the road.
  • Some parts of the footpath are uneven.
  • After approximately 92m cross the access road.
  • There is no designated crossing point.
  • Caution is advised when crossing because of traffic.
  • The traffic is moving from both directions.
  • The access road is quiet.
  • For step free access continue to follow the access road.

  • Alternatively after crossing the road continue straight ahead to 7 deep steps with handrails on both sides (photographs 10 and 11).
  • At the foot of the steps there is a designated crossing point.

  • After completing the crossing turn right and follow the access road onto Hawks Road.

  • There is a continued easy gradient downhill at this point on the route.
  • Turn left onto Hawks Road.
  • Follow Hawks Road for approximately 166m.

  • After approximately 81m Hawks Road crosses Quarryfield Road.
  • At Quarryfield Road there is a pedestrian crossing ahead of you.

  • From the bus stop use either the Quaylink Q1 or Q2 bus to Grey Street bus stop, opposite the Theatre Royal.

Grey Street Bus Stop to Monument Pilgrim Street Bus Stop

  • On exiting the bus at Grey Street Bus Stop, opposite the Theatre Royal turn 180 degrees.
  • Cross Grey Street.
  • There is no designated crossing point.
  • Caution is advised when crossing because of traffic.
  • The traffic is moving from both directions.
  • The surface of the road is block paved.
  • The road is raised so that there is level access to cross.
  • After crossing the road continue onto Shakespeare Street.
  • The surface of the route is paving slabs.
  • There is an easy gradient uphill at this point on the route.
  • Follow Shakespeare Street for approximately 50m.
  • After approximately 50m turn left onto Pilgrim Street.
  • There is an easy uphill gradient on this part of the route.
  • After approximately 44m Pilgrim Street crosses Market Street.
  • At Market Street there is a pedestrian crossing ahead of you.
  • At the crossing point traffic is coming from both directions.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
  • The surface of each crossing point is concrete tiles.
  • Each crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
  • The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
  • There is step free access along this part of the route.
  • After approximately 41m Pilgrim Street crosses Hood Street.

  • After approximately 27m the Monument Pilgrom Street Bus Stop is on the right.
  • From the bus stop use the 33 or 33A bus to Northumbria University bus stop on Sandyford Road.

Northumbria University Bus Stop to Students' Union

  • On exiting the bus at Northumbria University Bus Stop, turn right.
  • After approximately 30m there is a pedestrian crossing on the right.
  • At the crossing point traffic is coming from both directions.
  • There are dropped kerbs with tactile paving at each crossing point.
  • The surface of the crossing point is concrete tiles.
  • The crossing point is controlled by a visual indicator.
  • The visual indicators are activated by push buttons.
  • There is step free access along this part of the route.
  • After completing the crossing turn right.
  • Follow Sandyford Road for approximately 6m to the path leading to Squires Building.
  • Turn left and follow the footpath to the entrance to the Squires Building.
  • There is an easy downhill gradient leading to the entrance.
  • Enter the Squires Building through the main entrance, crossing to the Quad entrance.
  • There are steps to access the Quad entrance.
  • The steps can be overcome by using the ramp in the Library.
  • After exiting Squires Building turn left and pass along the front of the Sandyford Building.
  • After approximately 60m use the ramp to access the quad.
  • Turn right and cross over the quad to the side of the Students' Union building.
  • Turn right and follow the path along the side of the Students' Union, up a further easy ramp.
  • Follow the path to the left and continue along the front of the Students' Union.
  • After approximately 26m the accessible entrance to the Students' Union is on the left.
  • The surface of the path along this part of the route is paving slabs.
  • There is step free access along this part of the route.

  • Access to the Students' Union is by automatic door.
