Introduction (Route Information)

  • The route is from the NTU Clifton Campus (Stop CL97) on College Drive, past Benenson - "The Point", via the main plaza, past the Pavilion, Teaching and Learning (CTLB), Clifton Library, ISTC, iSmart and IBRC buildings to the Erasmus Darwin Building to the west of the campus.
    The approximate distance is about 480m and should take about 6 to 8 minutes.
    There are easy slopes and ramps on the route.
    Surface materials include concrete slab, tile and block paving.

Bus Stop to Plaza Crossing

  • This section is approximately 45m.
  • With your back to the bus stop, turn left to follow the path down toward the NTSU building (Benenson - "The Point") (photographs 1 to 2).
  • The paving is grey concrete blocks, uneven in places, and with a slight slope down toward the building.
  • At the building the path turns right at a metal post with a campus map (photograph 3).
  • There is a band of concrete slabs across the path, before the path continues (photograph 4).
  • Continue along the path past the entry to the Benenson Building - "The Point".
  • The path is level, but the grey block paving has an unsymmetrical mottled pattern which some may find visually confusing (photograph 5).
  • The path is uneven in places but is level.
  • To the right there is some bench seating and low concrete blocks that delineate the edge of the path (photograph 6).
  • Continue to the end of the Benenson Building to the corner where there is a crossing of paths at the start of the plaza area (photograph 7).
  • The Students Union Shop and Office are seen to the left (photograph 8).
  • Continue straight ahead.

Plaza Crossing to Pavilion / CTLB Bridge

  • This section is approximately 240m long.
  • Continue straight ahead, keeping to the centre of the plaza on the grey paved path, with the trees on your right (photographs 1 to 3).
  • The path has a very easy slope up for about 40m then levels off.
  • There is a camber down from right to left.
  • The paving is grey blockwork with an irregular pattern.
  • As the line of trees on the right end, the Pavilion building begins with a low brick wall and glass balustrade and gardens to the left (photograph 4).
  • Continue past the building and the steps that project out from the front of the building (photograph 5)
  • There is textured paving at the front of the steps.
  • Past the steps the path has a slight slope down as you approach the bridge (photograph 6).
  • The gardens on the left end with a metal waste bin on the left which also marks the end of the slope down (photographs 7 to 8).
  • Continue under the bridge from the Pavilion Building to the Teaching and Learning Building (CTLB) (photograph 9).
  • There is low bench seating on the right (photograph 10).
  • The head height under the bridge on the right is 195cm by the seating and 240cm by the building.
  • Continue ahead under the bridge.

Pavilion / CTLB Bridge to ISTC Building

  • This section is about 140m long.
  • The route has slopes up then down, steepening toward College Drive.
  • From the bridge continue straight ahead, past the building on the left and table tennis area on the right (photographs 1 to 3).
  • The path is level with a camber down from right to left toward the building.
  • After approximately 25m, at the end of the building, where the paths meet continue straight ahead (photograph 4).
  • The path to the right gives an accessible step free route to The Pavilion building and the Clifton Library (photograph 5).
  • The paths to the left are stepped (photograph 6).
  • Follow the path with a slight slope down between a hedge on the right (in front of the Clifton Library) and flower beds and shrubs on the left (photographs 7 to 10).
  • The irregular block pattern continues.
  • At the end of the path after 30m, turn sharp left, keeping the flower beds on your left (photograph 11).
  • The path has a slight slope down with bushes and shrubs both right and left.
  • Continue to where paths meet (photographs 12 to 13).
  • The paving changes to bonded gravel.
  • Bear right down the slope where the paving reverts to grey block paving, through the retractable metal bollards (photographs 14 to 15).
  • The minimum width between the bollards is 110cm when all are erected.
  • The path slopes downward and widens with metal wire fencing on the left (photographs 16 to 17).
  • At the street sign turn left to go down College Drive (photographs 18 to 19).
  • The ISTC building is on the left (photograph 20).
  • Continue 25m past shrubs and bushes on the left to the point where the block paving finishes and tarmac starts (photograph 21 to 22).
  • There is a crossing marked by textured paving.
  • Continue past this crossing.
  • After 25m there is a side entrance into the ISTC Building (photograph 23).
  • Continue another 15m to a second crossing, marked by textured paving (photograph 24).
  • Prepare to turn right to cross.

College Drive Crossing

  • The roadway has red block paving, which is raised to create a level crossing, without drop kerbs (photographs 1 to 2).

  • The crossing is not signalled.
  • Vehicles travel both directions.
  • Traffic is light.
  • The edge of the crossing is marked by textured paving to both sides (photographs 3 to 5).

College Drive Crossing to Erasmus Darwin Reception

  • After crossing turn lift to continue down College Drive (photograph 1).
  • The paving is red block paving and uneven in places (photographs 2 to 3).
  • There is a slight slope down.
  • Continue past some Blue Badge parking bays in front of the IBRC building
  • There is a slight ramp and textured paving to mark the beginning and end of the parking bays (photograph 4).
  • After the parking bays the path bears to the right (photograph 5).
  • The path reduces to 130cm and there is lawn on each side.
  • At the end of the building follow the path round to the right.
  • On the right is the entrance to the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Centre (IBRC) building (photograph 6).
  • Keep to the left to go through an opening marked by a bollard and direction sign (photographs 7 to 8).
  • There is a bench seat on your right.
  • As you pass through the iSmart building is directly ahead (photograph 9).
  • Turn right and follow the red block path (photographs 10 to 11).
  • Care should be taken as vehicles share this stretch of the route.
  • Continue straight ahead toward the Erasmus Darwin building.
  • Go past the Erasmus Darwin sign on the roundabout and bear round to the left (photograph 12).
  • The path here is level.
  • Continue past a tree on the left and Blue Badge Bay on the right to pass under the building bridge (photographs 13 to 14).
  • After the bridge turn to the right and enter the building via the automatic doors (photographs 15 to 17).
  • The main reception is to the right as you enter (photograph 18).
