Introduction (Route Information)

  • The route is from the NTU City Campus Bus Stop (Stop G1) on S Sherwood Street, up Burton Street to Goldsmith Street, along the front of the Newton Building, past the Maudslay Building and NTU City Campus southbound tram stop to the main entrance to the Boots Library.
    The distance of the route is approximately 450m and should take approximately 6 to 8 minutes.
    There are easy slopes along the route.
    The surface along the route includes concrete and stone paving.
    There are no road crossings to be made, but there is a service yard entrance past the Maudslay Building.
    Trams run regularly up and down Goldsmith Street. Traffic is restricted on this road.

Bus Stop G1 to Burton Street / Goldsmith Street Junction

  • From the bus stop, with your back to the road turn left to go up Sherwood Street to the junction with Burton Street (about 30m) (photographs 1 to 4).
  • There is a slight slope up for the full length.
  • The paving is uneven with concrete slabs and the occasional raised inspection chamber.
  • On the right is a low wall and on the left is a kerb to the street.
  • Halfway up the path there is a road sign with two posts on the road side (photographs 5 and 6).
  • As you approach Burton Street there are two telephone boxes on your right then a lamppost on the left (photographs 7 to 9).
  • At Burton Street follow the pavement to right to go up the hill past the Newton Building up to Goldsmith Street (about 75m) (photographs 10 to 11).
  • There is a slight slope up for the full length.
  • The paving is uneven with concrete slabs and the occasional raised inspection chamber.
  • There is textured paving across the pavement to mark a crossing to your left.
  • Halfway up on the right the steps to the Burton Street entrance protrude from the wall on the left (photographs 12 to 15).
  • On the right there is brown concrete paving to mark the entrance at the kerb edge.
  • Past the steps the wall continues at the side of the ramp entrance to the building (photograph 16).
  • The wall then gives way to a flower bed and shrubs up to the junction with Goldsmith Street (photograph 17 to 18).
  • Continue up to the junction of Burton Street and Goldsmith Street.
  • At the corner of the building there is a lamp post to the right and a signpost to the left (photograph 19).
  • Pass through these to the junction of the paths.
  • On the right is a sign for the university in front of shrubs (photograph 20) and ahead is a telephone box (photograph 21).

Burton Street / Goldsmith Street Junction to Maudslay Building

  • At Goldsmith Street continue past the telephone box on your right, then follow the pavement to the right (photographs 1 to 5).
  • There are electrical junction boxes on the right.
  • Follow the pavement with the street to the left and Newton building entrance steps to the Maudslay building entrance. (approximately 150m) (photographs 6 to 10).
  • There is a slight slope down for the full length.
  • The paving is uneven with concrete tiles and the inspection chambers.
  • There are regular posts for tram wires on your right in the centre of a wide pavement.
  • Keep to the left and continue until you reach a vehicle lay-by (photograph 8).
    Pass the lay-by and continue on the path following Goldsmith Street.
  • The Maudslay Building entrance is to your right (photograph 10).

Maudslay Building to Service Yard

  • From the Maudslay Building continue down Goldsmith Street until the pavement narrows to the service yard entrance (approximately 60m) (photographs 1 to 2).
  • There is a slight slope down for the full length.
  • The paving is uneven with concrete tiles and inspection chambers. There is block paving at the service yard entrance.
  • There are posts for tram wires on your right.
  • There is bench seating and a flower bed in front of the Maudslay Building (photograph 3 to 4).
  • Past the Maudslay building the pavement narrows and there is a high brick wall on the right in front of a service yard (photographs 5 to 6) .
  • There is a slight ramp down at the entrance to the service yard and a ramp up at the far side (photographs 7 to 9).
  • Care should be taken of vehicles entering the service yard.

Service Yard to Boots Library Entrance

  • From the service yard continue down Goldsmith Street past the Boots Library building on your right and the NTU City Campus southbound tram stop to the Boots Library Entrance at the end of the building (approximately 100m) (photographs 1 to 3).
  • There is a slight slope down to the tram stop and then the pavement levels off.
  • The paving is uneven with concrete tiles and inspection chambers.
  • There is block paving at the service yard entrance but no textured paving.
  • Past the service yard, the Boots Library building starts on the right. The road on the left has trams only.
  • The NTU Security Office is located within the building on the right (photograph 4).
  • At the beginning of the tram stop there is a line of textured paving then a slight slope up (photographs 5 to 7).
  • There is then a line of textured paving on the left to mark the edge of the platform / pavement (photographs 8 to 9).
  • Care must be taken as there is a deep kerb step on the left at the edge.
    To the right of the platform / pavement there are posts for the tram wires, ticket machines, sign posts and passenger waiting shelter (photographs 10 to 14).
  • At the end of the platform there is a slight slope down and textured paving to mark the end of the tram stop (photographs 15 to 17).
  • Continue 35m to the end of the building and turn right (photographs 18 to 19).
  • The entrance to the Boots Library is on your right (photograph 20).
