Access Guide
Introduction (Route Information)
- The route is from the NTU City Campus Bus Stop (Stop G1) on South Sherwood Street, up Burton Street to Goldsmith Street.
After crossing Godsmith Street, the route continues Godsmith Street, across Chaucer Street, past the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism and along the front of the Chaucer Building to the main entrance to the Chaucer Reception.
The distance of the route is approximately 400m and should take approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
There are easy slopes and ramps as part of the route.
The surface along the route includes block and concrete tile paving.
The route includes crossing Goldsmith Street, which has regular trams running each way, and Chaucer Street. - The NTU City Campus Bus Stop, Stop G1, is served by the Bus route Go2 Uni 4 that links the University City and Clifton Campuses.

Bus Stop G1 to Burton Street / Goldsmith Street Junction
- From the bus stop, with your back to the road turn left to go up Sherwood Street to the junction with Burton Street (about 30m) (photographs 1 to 4).
- There is a slight slope up for the full length.
- The paving is uneven with concrete slabs and the occasional raised inspection chamber.
- On the right is a low wall and on the left is a kerb to the street.
- Halfway up the path there is a road sign with two posts on the road side (photographs 5 and 6).
- As you approach Burton Street there are two telephone boxes on your right then a lamppost on the left (photographs 7 to 9).
- At Burton Street follow the pavement to right to go up the hill past the Newton Building up to Goldsmith Street (about 75m) (photographs 10 to 11).
- There is a slight slope up for the full length.
- The paving is uneven with concrete slabs and the occasional raised inspection chamber.
- There is textured paving across the pavement to mark a crossing to your left.
- Halfway up on the right the steps to the Burton Street entrance protrude from the wall on the left (photographs 12 to 15).
- On the right there is brown concrete paving to mark the entrance at the kerb edge.
- Past the steps the wall continues at the side of the ramp entrance to the building (photograph 16).
- The wall then gives way to a flower bed and shrubs up to the junction with Goldsmith Street (photograph 17 to 18).
- Continue up to the junction of Burton Street and Goldsmith Street.
- At the corner of the building there is a lamp post to the right and a signpost to the left (photograph 19).
- Pass through these to the junction of the paths.
- On the right is a sign for the university in front of shrubs (photograph 20) and a telephone box (photograph 21).
- Continue past the telephone box to the pelican crossing on Goldsmith Street ahead (photograph 22)..
Goldsmith Street Crossing
- The crossing is two lines wide (photographs 1 and 2). The crossing is tarmac with tram tracks.
- The control button is on the right. There is no audio signal, but there is a revolving cone indicator below (photograph 3).
- There are trams and normal traffic travelling both ways.
- There is textured paving on dropped kerbs to each pavement . (photographs 4 and 5).

Goldsmith Crossing to Chaucer Street
- After crossing turn right to follow Goldsmith Street down to Chaucer Street, crossing Masonic Place and a car park entry by the Belgrave Rooms (about 140m) (photograph 1).
- There is a slight slope down for the length of the section.
- Trams run regularly down this street.
- The pavement is uneven, blockwork from the crossing to Masonic Place.
- There are raised inspection chamber covers in the centre of the pavement (photographs 2, 7 and 8).
- There are advertisement signs and wheelie bins placed outside businesses that reduce the width of the pavement (photographs 3 to 6).
- Masonic Place crosses the pavement up to the left after about 35m, but traffic is limited to service vehicles only. There is level crossing but with a camber from left to right (photographs 9).
- Beyond Masonic Place the paving changes to concrete tiles (photographs 10 to 11).
- Continue past a stone and brick building (The Belgrave Rooms) on your left to a low wall and railings (photographs 12 to 14).
- There is an access road to The Belgrave Rooms and St Andrews with Castle Gate URC Church car park to the left (photographs 15 to 17).
- The access road is paved with block paving and there is a lip to the kerbs to each side of the road.
- The concrete tile paving continues to Chaucer Road and textured paving (photographs 18 to 20).
Chaucer Street Crossing
- Chaucer Street is two way standard traffic, with a steep slope from the left down to the right.
- The crossing is not signalled.
- The road is tarmacked and there is a dropped kerb to each pavement.
Chaucer Street to Chaucer Reception
- After crossing continue down Goldsmith Street.
- There is a red brick wall to your left which gives way to a flower bed.
- The path then widens in front of the entrance to the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism (photographs 1 to 6).
- Continue down Goldsmith Street where the pavement narrows (photograph 7).
- There are raised inspection covers in the pavement (photograph 8).
- To the left are trees in front of the Chaucer building (photograph 9 to 10).
- Continue to the NTU City Campus northbound tram stop past a metal waste bin (photograph 11)..
- At the beginning of the tram stop there is a line of textured paving then a slight slope up (photograph 12).
- There is then a line of textured paving on the right to mark the edge of the platform / pavement (photograph 13).
- Care must be taken as there is a deep kerb step on the left at the edge (photograph 14).
- Past the station sign and posts (photographs 15 and 16), the main entrance to Chaucer is to the left behind the trams stop (photograph 17).
- At the main entrance keep to the right of the entrance lobby.
- There are painted concrete columns at the side of the path (photograph 18).
- The accessible entrance is in the corner facing the street (photographs 19 and 20). Access is by key card.
- The reception is directly ahead as you enter (photograph 21)..
