Introduction (South Wigston Streetscape (South Wigston Railway Station to Blaby Road Park via Blaby Road))
- This guide covers the route from South Wigston Railway Station and the main shopping area of South Wigston, along Blaby Road, and ends at Blaby Road Park. The route is approximately 0.7 miles (1,112 metres) and is approximately a 15 minute to walk. The route has some slight and steep slopes along it. Pathway surfaces are tarmac, paving slabs and block paving. The pathways have some uneven sections, which include some raised manhole covers. The road surfaces are tarmac, with dropped kerbs and tactile paving at most crossing points. There are opportunities to sit and rest.
Getting Here
- By Car:
- The A563 Attlee Way (Pork Pie Roundabout) is approximately 1.5 miles from the south eastern edge of the streetscape (Blaby Road Park) via Blaby Road and Saffron Road.
- Parking:
- There is limited on street Blue Badge parking and standard parking available on Blaby Road, Kirkdale Road and Saffron Road and side roads throughout the route.
- Several public car parks are also available throughout the route.
- By Bus:
- There are several bus stops along Blaby Road and Saffron Road with direct services available to Wigston, Oadby, South Wigston and Leicester.

- By Train:
- South Wigston Railway Station is approximately 0.1 miles away from the northern end of the route where Kirkdale Road and Railway Station Footbridge meet.
- There is step-free access to the platforms.
- There are direct train services available to Leicester and Birmingham.

Parking
- On Street Parking:
- There are limited Blue Badge and standard on street parking bays on surrounding side roads such as the Blaby Road, Kirkdale Road and surrounding side roads.
- There is no charge for these parking bays.
- Parking is limited to between 20 minutes and 60 minutes for non-Blue Badge holders depending on the parking area.
- Blue Badge holders may park in any of the bays for a maximum of 2 hours.

- This is a pay and display car park.

- This is a pay and display car park.
Platform 1 and 2 South Wigston Railway Station via South Wigston Railway Footbridge to Kirkdale Road
- South Wigston Railway Station is an unmanned.
- The distance from Platform 1 and 2 South Wigston Railway Station to Kirkdale Road via South Wigston Railway Footbridge is approximately 105m.
- This section is a pedestrian only section with varying slight to steep slopes throughout.
- South Wigston Train Station platforms 1 and 2 are tarmac with tactile paving running along the platform and concrete paving slabs at the platform edge.
- There is a shelter on each platform for weather protection.
- The ramp leading from platform 1 is tarmac and some of it is uneven.
- The ramp is over 150cm in width.
- The ramp is long (30m approximately) with resting points at 6m intervals but the resting points do not have a 150cm c 150cm turning space for a wheelchair user.
- There are some obstructions at the top of the ramp leading from platform 1.
- The obstructions include a help point and a notice board.
- The help point buttons to get assistance are between 105 and 120cm in height.
- There is a similar help point at the exit to platform 2, this help point is at the same height as the help point for platform 1.
- From the top of the exit ramp of platform 1, turn right to head over the footbridge towards platform 2 in the direction of Kirkdale Road.
- There are barriers immediately ahead as you turn right onto the footbridge from platform 1, the barriers are more than 150cm in width.
- There is a steep ramp at the entrance of the footbridge.
- The ramp is more than 150cm wide and there are no handrails.
- The footbridge surface is tarmac which is uneven in places.
- It levels out after the barriers until just after the entrance to platform 2
- Platform 2 has similar specifications to platform 1.
- From platform 2 towards Kirkdale Road the footbridge has a slight uphill ramp, at its peak it then changes to a steep downhill ramp towards the footbridge exit.
- There are bollards at the exit of the footbridge.
- The minimum width of the bollards is 133cm.
- These bollards can be avoided by following the path left or right.
- Both of these pathways are tarmac and obstructed by parked cars.
- There is a park type bench to rest after the bollards, the bench does have armrests.
- The path has a slight slope going downhill.
- At the end of this path you reach the junction with Kenilworth Road.
Junction – South Wigston Railway Footbridge and Kirkdale Road
- At the junction of the footbridge and Kirkdale Road, stay on the pavement and follow it round to the right.
- The path is tarmac.
- There is an slight camber from right to left for the duration of the pathway.
- There are uneven surfaces due to drainage gullies and manhole covers.
- There are other obstructions such as drain covers, wheelie Bins and protruding drainpipes and lamp posts.
- Towards the end of Kirkdale Road there is a car park on the right.
- There are bollards at this point with a gap between them of 150cm.
- The bollards contrast with the pavement and have visual markings around the top.
- Follow Kirkdale Road to the end to the junction with Saffron Road.
Junction – Kirkdale Road and Saffron Road (B5366)
- At the junction of Kirkdale and Saffron Road, there are dropped kerbs.
- The dropped kerbs do not have tactile paving.
- Use the dropped kerbs to cross Kirkdale Road and continue along Saffron Road on the left hand side.
Kirkdale Road to St Thomas Road/ Blaby Road via Saffron Road (B5366)
- The distance from Kirkdale Road to St. Thomas Road / Blaby Road via Saffron Road is approximately 160m.
- As you exit Kirkdale Road, head towards Blaby Road along Saffron Road.
- The route has a slight downhill slope.
- The pavement is tarmac.
- There are uneven surfaces due to repairs and manhole covers.
- There are obstructions along the pathway created by telegraph poles, street lights, trees and pedestrian crossing points.
- The pathways on both sides are wide but very uneven due to repair work and drive entrances.
- The recommended route as described in this guide is to stay on the left hand side pathway and follow it to the junction of Saffron and St Thomas Road.
Junction – St Thomas Road, Blaby Road and Saffron Road (B5366)
- At the end of Saffron Road there is a main junction.
- Do not cross this junction but instead, stay left and continue around the bend into Blaby Road.
- As you follow the path to the left there is tactile paving causing an uneven surface to your right.
- There is also a slight camber from left to right.
- The pathway changes from tarmac to block paving just before the junction and changes to paving slabs further around the bend.
Saffron Road to Dunton Street via Blaby Road
- The distance from Saffron Road to Dunton Street via Blaby Road is approximately 160m.
- As you exit Saffron Road, travelling along Blaby Road towards Dunton Street, the route is a slightly uphill.
- The pavement is paving slabs and block paving.
- The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides.
- There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as trees, signs and bollards.
- The pathways have dropped kerbs with tactile paving at all side street crossing points.
- There is a pedestrian crossing midway along the section opposite Leopold Street.
- The crossings have push button controls and visual indicators.
- The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
- There is an audio alert, and there are rotating cones under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
- The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
- There are bus stops available along most parts of the route.
- There is some bench seating throughout this section on both sides.
- There is some limited on street Blue Badge parking available.
Junction – Dunton Street, Fairfield Street and Blaby Road
- There are several crossings at this junction to cross Dunton Street, Fairfield Street and Blaby Road.
- The crossings over Fairfield Street and Dunton Street have dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- The crossings over Blaby Road have dropped kerbs but no tactile paving on both sides.
- The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
- The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete at all crossings.
- There is a slight downhill slope leading from the junction into Dunston Street.
- There is a slight uphill slope leading from the junction into Fairfield Street.
- Blaby Road is level at this junction.
- The surface of the road is tarmac at all crossings.
- The roads at this junction are very busy.
Dunton Road to Canal Street via Blaby Road
- The distance from Dunton Street to Canal Street via Blaby Road is approximately 160m.
- As you exit Dunton Street along Blaby Road towards Canal Street the route is level but becomes a slight uphill slope.
- There is a pedestrian crossing midway along the section opposite Glangate.
- The crossings have push button controls and visual indicators.
- The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
- There is no audio alert, however, there are rotating cones under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
- The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
- The pavement is block paving and concrete.
- On both sides you have to pass some bollards and signboards.
- There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as trees, signs, railings, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
- There are some side roads/entrances to cross and these are level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
- There are bus stops available along most parts of the route.
- There is some bench seating throughout this section on both sides.
- There is some limited on street Blue Badge parking available throughout.
Junction – Blaby Road and Canal Street
- There are several pedestrian crossings at this junction to cross Blaby Road and Canal Street.
- The crossings have push button controls and visual indicators.
- The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
- There is no audio alert, however, there are rotating cones under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
- The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
- The surface of the pathways is block paving and concrete at all crossings.
- There is a slight to downhill slope leading from the junction into Canal Street.
- The surface of the road is tarmac at all crossings.
- The roads at this junction are very busy.
Canal Street to Blaby Road Park
- As you cross Canal Street at the crossing there are numerous obstacles with repairs to the tarmac and a mixture of block paving, concrete and slabs
- The opposite side of the road is similar with other obstacles, including bollards, bus stops, fixed bins and posts for road signs.
Junction – Blaby Road Park and Blaby Road Park
- There is a pedestrian crossing opposite the entrance to the park to cross Blaby Road.
- The crossing has push button controls and visual indicators.
- The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
- There is no audio alert, however, there are rotating cones under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
- The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
- The surface of the crossing point is tarmac and tactile paving.
- The surface of the road is tarmac at all crossings.
- The roads at this junction are very busy.
