Introduction (Wigston Streetscape - Victoria Street to Victoria Street (Shopping Area Loop))

  • This guide covers the main shopping area of Wigston in a loop around the main shopping areas. This guide runs from Victoria Street/Wakes Road at the north end of Wigston town centre and goes in a large loop via the main shopping areas. The route is approximately 0.6 miles (965metres) and would take approximately 14-20 minutes to walk. The route has some slight and steep slopes. Pathway surfaces are tarmac concrete paving slabs and block paving. The pathways have some uneven sections, which include some raised manhole covers. The road surfaces are tarmac, with dropped kerbs and tactile paving at most crossing points. There are opportunities to sit and rest.

Getting Here

  • By Car:
  • The A563 Palmerston Way is approximately 1.9 miles away from Victoria Street / Wakes Road at the northern end of the streetscape via A5199 Welford Road, A5199 Leicester Road, A5199 Bull Head Street and Wakes Road.
  • Parking:
  • There is limited street Blue Badge parking and standard parking available on the Leicester Road and side roads throughout the route.
  • Several public car parks are also available throughout the route.
  • By Bus:
  • There are several bus stops along the route such as the Leicester Road and A5199 Bull Head Street with direct services available to Leicester, Crown Hills, Oadby and Glenfield.

  • By Train:
  • South Wigston Railway Station is approximately 2.2 miles away from the northern end of the route.
  • There is step-free access to the platforms.

Parking

  • On Street Parking:
  • There are limited Blue Badge and standard on street parking bays on surrounding side roads such as the Leicester Road and other side roads.
  • There is no charge for these parking bays.
  • Parking is limited to between 60minutes for non-Blue Badge holders depending on the parking area.
  • Blue Badge holders may park in any of the bays for a maximum of 2 hours.

Junction – Victoria Street, Wakes Road and Leicester Road

  • There are several crossings at this junction to cross Victoria Street, Wakes Road and Leicester Road.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is a mixture of block paving and concrete with dropped kerbs and tactile.
  • There are no official crossing points, just dropped kerbs.
  • There is a slight slope downhill leading from the junction into Wakes Road.
  • There is a slight slope uphill leading from the junction into Leicester Road (south to north).
  • The roads at this junction are very busy.

Victoria Street to Frederick Street via Leicester Road

  • The distance from Victoria Street to Frederick Street via Leicester Road is approximately 195 metres.
  • As you exit Victoria Street and travel along Leicester Road, it is level apart from the dropped kerbs as you head from the junction into Leicester Road.
  • All paving is a mixture of block paving and concrete slabs on both sides.
  • There are various hazards with broken slabs and drain covers.
  • There are also advertising signs, bins and lampposts.
  • There are some bollards of different dimensions and varied colours / markings.
  • There is a crossing point opposite Wetherspoons with a rest island but no lights.
  • It is suggested that you use the one further down opposite the Tap and Barrel.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing midway along the section opposite the Tap and Barrel and Greggs.
  • The crossings have push button controls and visual indicators.
  • The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
  • There is an audio alert and there is a rotating cone under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide.
  • There are bus stops available along most parts of the route.
  • There is some seating available throughout the route.
  • There is some limited on-street Blue Badge parking available throughout in the side streets off Leicester Road.

Junction – Frederick Street and Leicester Road

  • The junction of Fredrick Street is approximately 195m from Victoria Street / Leicester Road junction.
  • The crossing at this junction to cross Frederick Street is very busy due the parking areas and a busy island just a short way down.
  • The crossing point is as Frederick Street meets Leicester Road. The crossing has dropped kerbs and block paving.

Frederick Street to Bell Street via Leicester Road

  • The distance from Frederick Street to Bell Street via Leicester Road is approximately 100m.
  • As you exit Frederick Street to Bell Street via Leicester Road the route is level.
  • The pavement is block paving and concrete.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some bollards and signboards.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, cash points, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
  • There are some side roads/entrances to cross and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • There are bus stops available along most parts of the route.
  • There is some bench seating throughout this section on both sides.
  • There is some limited on street Blue Badge parking available throughout the Leicester Road.

Junction – Bell Street and Leicester Road

  • There are a couple of crossings at this junction to cross Bell Street and Leicester Road.
  • There is a pedestrian crossing to cross Leicester Road by Costa Coffee.
  • The crossing has push button controls and visual indicators.
  • The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
  • There is an audible alert and there are rotating cones under each button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
  • The crossings over the Bell Street has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and Concrete at all crossings.
  • There is a slight to uphill slope leading from the junction into Bell Street.
  • The surface of the road is tarmac at all crossings.
  • The roads at this junction are very busy.
  • As you turn into Bell Street there is Blue Badge parking.
  • Bell street changes to a pedestrian area after this parking.

Leicester Road to A5199 Bull Head Street via Bell Street (Pedestrian Only Area)

  • The distance from Leicester Road to A5199 Bull Head Street via Bell Street is approximately 200m.
  • Blue Badge parking is available,
  • As you exit Leicester Road and go along the Bell Streets towards Bull Head Street the route is a slight uphill slope but then become level as you approach Iceland Food Shop.
  • The pavement is block paving and concrete.
  • The pathway is very wide.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as signs, railings, cycle racks, bins, and signboards.
  • There are lots of cubed black squares and benches for the duration of the pedestrian area all the way to Bull Head Road.
  • There are some side roads/entrances to cross and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • There is some bench seating throughout this section on both sides.
  • Some of the pavement area has slightly protruding manhole covers.

Junction – Bell Street and A5199 Bull Head Street

  • There is a pedestrian crossing to cross A5199 Bull Head Street.
  • The crossing has push button controls and visual indicators.
  • The buttons are 110cm to 114cm high.
  • There is an audio alert and a rotating cone under the button unit indicating when it is safe to cross.
  • The crossing over the Bell Street has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • The surface of the pathways is block paving and Concrete at all crossings.
  • There is a slight to uphill slope leading from the junction into A5199 Bull Head Street (right to left as you exit Bell Street).
  • The surface of the road is tarmac at all crossings.
  • The roads at this junction are very busy.

Bell Street to Wakes Road via A5199 Bull Head Street and Burgess Street

  • The distance from Bell Street to Wakes Road via A5199 Bull Head Street and Burgess Street is approximately 330m.
  • As you exit Bell Street and turn left onto A5199 Bull Head Street there is a slight uphill slope (right to left as you exit Bell Street).
  • The pavement is paving slabs and tarmac.
  • The pathways on both sides are wide but often narrow to less than 120cm on both sides to pass some bollards and signboards.
  • There are some obstructions along the pavement on both sides such as trees, signs, railings, cycle racks, bus stops, bins, and signboards.
  • There are some side roads/entrances to cross and these are mainly level with the pathways with some having just dropped kerbs and no tactile paving.
  • The surface of the road at all crossings is tarmac.
  • There are bus stops available along most parts of the route.
  • There is some bench seating throughout this section on both sides.
  • There is some limited on street Blue Badge parking available on some side roads.
  • As you head up, the library will be on your left.
  • There is a grassed area here.
  • As you head towards the island, there is a barrier where the footpath ends. The only way to get to Wakes road is to turn left into Burgess street.
  • As you turn into Burgess street the is a very steep slope on the pavement with raised man hole covers and a small wall to your left.
  • The path down into Burgess Street is very steep for the first 10m.

Burgess Street to Wakes Road Bypassing Main Island

  • Burgess Street has a tarmac pavement and is uneven along its entirety.
  • The path is 180cm wide but narrows at least once to 110cm due to a sign post and hedge.
  • This street has many dropped kerbs at the entrance to houses more so, towards the end of the street and on the right.
  • To your left at this point is one of the car parks that can be used (Junction Road).
  • Follow it around to the right until the houses end and there will be a dropped kerb and a crossing point.

Burgess Street Head to Victoria Street/Leicester Road via Wakes Road

  • The distance from Burgess Street back to the junction of Victoria Street/Leicester Road and Wakes Road is approximately 60m.
  • As you head towards Victoria Street/Leicester Road via Wakes Road, Junction Road car park will be on your left.
  • The path is tarmac with an uneven surface due to damage and raised metal work.
  • There are sign and lamp posts along with a large planter.
  • There are bollards to your left which have fair contrast.
  • You will arrive at a dropped kerb to cross the road, with traffic coming from the left only.
  • This crossing is generally quiet.
  • Once you cross you have an approximately 50m walk to bring you back to the junction of Victoria Street/Leicester Road/Wakes Road.
