Route Overview

  • This access guide describes the most accessible route from the Library to Godward Square, at Queen Mary University of London's Mile End campus.
  • The route has a total distance of approximately 390m and should take around 5 minutes to walk on average.
  • The route is mostly level, with some very easy and slight slopes in places, including on dropped kerbs. There are no steep gradients or uneven surfaces.
  • There is one public road to cross (Bancroft Road), along with some minor service roads.

Library to Library Square

  • Exit the library and head diagonally left across Library Square for approximately 15m.
  • The square has a level block-paved surface, and a wayfinding signage board with a campus map.
  • Exit Library Square via the pathway signed "Geography Square, Godward Square, Graduate Square and Queens' Square", heading towards the rear of the Queens' Building.
  • There are two bollards in the centre of the path that have a low colour contrast with the surface, and a minimum width between them of 150cm.

Library Square to Mile End Road

  • Turn left along the thoroughfare running between the G.O. Jones Building and the Queens' Building for around 125m.
  • The surface is smooth tarmac, and there is a very slight downhill gradient along this section of the route.
  • The route runs through a service area with some parking spaces, although vehicular traffic is very light. There is a gully, bollards and street trees to your left
  • The route narrows beside the service area entrance barrier to a width of 109cm, where there some planters ahead of you.
  • Go around the planters and bear left, heading along a path with a concrete paving slab surface towards the campus pedestrian exit gate onto Mile End Road. There is a further wayfinding signage post with a campus map on your right as you approach the gate.
  • Exit the campus through the gate, which is permanently-held-open to a width of 173cm. There is a small raised threshold at the gate.

Mile End Road to Bancroft Road

  • Turn right onto Mile End Road and continue for approximately 155m.
  • This section of the route has a level surface comprised of concrete paving slabs. There are lamp posts, telecommunications cabinets and street trees, although none narrow the pavement to under 120cm. There may, however, be dockless e-bikes which are parked in an obstructive manner. There is a cycle lane in the roadway on the left which has a blue-painted surface.
  • Proceed along the pavement in front of the Queens' Building.
  • Cross the service road exit from the campus, which has dropped kerbs with a slight gradient and tactile paving on both sides, and on which traffic is light and emerges from the right. Then, after passing the clock tower, cross the service road entry into the campus, which has dropped kerbs with a slight gradient and tactile paving on both sides, and on which traffic is light and emerges from the left. Both of these service roads have a smooth tarmac surface.
  • There is then a floating bus stop on the left, with an area of tactile paving across the pavement where the cycle lane becomes flush with the pavement to allow for a level pedestrian crossing over to the bus stop.
  • The Engineering Building East Entrance is to your right, by which there are bollards on the right hand side of the pavement.
  • Continue ahead until you reach Bancroft Road.

Cross Bancroft Road

  • Cross Bancroft Road.
  • The crossing point is unmarked and has flush kerbs with tactile paving on both sides.
  • The road has a smooth and level tarmac surface. Traffic travels in both directions and is moderate.

Bancroft Road to Godward Gate

  • Turn right onto Bancroft Road, passing beneath the Engineering Building (which is on a bridge above the road).
  • This section of the route is level, and has a surface comprised of concrete, concrete paving slabs, and tarmac. There are bollards, street lamps and parking restriction signs, although none of these reduce the pavement width to below 120cm. It may be further obstructed by dockless e-bikes parked inconsiderately.
  • Cross a small service passageway leading to the Engineering Building stores. There is unlikely to be any vehicular traffic here. The crossing point is flush with the pavement (if you move away from the road a little) and does not have any tactile paving.
  • Continue ahead, ignoring the ramp on your left, until you reach the Godward Gate. Cross the vehicular access point service road at Godward Gate, which is flush with the pavement (if you move away from the road a little) and does not have any tactile paving. Vehicular traffic is light and approaches from both directions.

Godward Gate to Godward Square

  • After passing the vehicular gate, turn left through the pedestrian gate at Godward Gate.
  • There is a wayfinding signage board with a campus map here, as well as wall-mounted wayfinding signage on the wall of the Union Shop.
  • The gate is permanently-held-open to a width of 140cm.
  • The path leading from the gate to Godward Square has a slight uphill slope and an even surface of concrete paving slabs. There are bollards which separate it from the vehicular access road.
  • After approximately 20m, you will reach the end of the route at Godward Square.
