Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is stepped or ramped (steep) from the Founder's Building side.
  • The approach to the building is step-free and level from the campus side.
  • The Emily Wilding Davison Building has two entrances.
    The main entrance provides step-free level access into floor G.
    The rear entrance provides stepped or ramped access (steep) into floor G.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building via the use of a lift.

  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key pad at a height of 112cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 110cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 99cm.
  • A key card or access code is required for this door to open.
  • There is a second set of double automatic doors .
  • The second set of doors open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 157cm.
  • The second set of doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There are additional revolving doors with a minimum width of 100cm that do not require key cards for access.

Reception (Helpdesk)

  • The reception is located ahead and to the right as you enter the building.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 25m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 97cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 76cm.
  • The reception has a television, windows and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is a clearly signed fixed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
  • Though there is no designated seating for this reception there is a variety of general seating available in close proximity within the area.

Access To (Library)

  • The library is located on floor G of the Emily Wilding Davison Building.
  • The most accessible route has step-free level access.
  • There is no signage on or near the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access into the library.

Library

  • There is step-free level access throughout the library, this may include the use of a lift.

  • Access throughout the library may include manual doors, doors permanently held open and narrow walkways.

  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located ahead and to the right as you enter.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 15m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The floors LG, G, 1 and 2 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • Some of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 88cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 100cm (width) x 162cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • The majority of the internal controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.

Stairs (To Floor M)

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the second floor of the library, to the left as you exit the lift.
  • There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
  • The floors 2 and M can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.

Toilet with Adaptations (Floor G - Left Hand Transfer)
