Useful Information

Introduction

  • This route is from Founders Square to Katherine Worth Building. This route is approximately 750m via Egham Hill and takes around 10 minutes to complete by foot.
  • The main hazards along this route are uncontrolled road crossings, ramps and slopes and congested pedestrian areas.

Founders Square

  • The Founders Square is an open events space located between the Emily Wilding Davison Building and the Founders Building.
  • This area is accessed via steps or ramps from the Emily Wilding Davison Building, by ramped access from the north of the campus and stepped access only from the south.
  • This area has a level and even stone slab surface.
  • This area contains a wide open space lined with bench seating on three sides (as shown in photographs 5 and 6) and by a tiered stone bench seating array on the north side of the square. This tiered seating is access via 15+, medium height steps with handrails on the left only.

Founders Square to University Access Road Windsor Building Crossing

  • Exit Founders Square by the closest ramp to the Founders Building, located to the left as you exit Founders Building onto Founders Square.
  • The ramp leading off Founders Square has an even tarmac surface with a long, slight slope. This slope is shown in photographs 2 and 3.
  • After approximately 60m, at the top of the slope turn right along the path (shown in photographs 4 and 5).
  • This path has an even and level tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 25m bear slightly left and follow the path (shown in photographs 6 and 7) along the side of the Windsor Building.
  • Once past the Windsor Building cross the university access road using the zebra crossing directly ahead.
  • This is a zebra crossing with tactile paving on the far side only and level access on both sides of the crossing. This crossing is shown in photographs 9, 10 and 11).
  • After crossing turn right and follow pavement.
  • This pavement is level and even with a tarmac surface.

University Access Road Windsor Building Crossing to Egham Hill (A30)

  • Continue along the pavement for approximately 30m then turn left onto a tarmac path which is even and level.
  • After approximately 25m along the path cross the Williams Annex access road.
  • This is a level zebra crossing with no tactile paving across a very quiet road.
  • Continue ahead along the level and even tarmac path for approximately 30m to (A30) Egham Hill.
  • At the entrance to Egham Hill there is an open gate way 120cm wide.
  • After joining Egham Hill turn right along the pavement.

Egham Hill (A30) to Chestnut Drive

  • Turn right on to Egham Hill (A30).
  • The pavement here is split between a cycleway and pedestrian path, keep right on the pedestrian path.
  • The pavement here has an even and level tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 10m there is a line of corduroy tactile paving which marks the cycleway joining pedestrian path, this is shown in photographs 2 and 3.
  • After approximately 5m turn left to cross Egham Hill at the traffic light controlled crossing.
  • This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides with a central level island with no tactile paving.
  • The traffic lights have audible warnings and rotating cones.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 4, 5 and 6.
  • After crossing Egham Hill turn right.
  • Head along Egham Hill, this pavement has an even and level tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 5m you pass the entrance to the George Elliot halls on the left, this is shown in photographs 7 and 8.
  • Continue along Egham Hill.
  • After approximately 20m the path splits into a separate cycleway and pedestrian path.
  • This is marked by a line of corduroy tactile paving.
  • Keep left on the path.
  • This is shown in photograph 9.
  • After approximately 30m a lamppost is located in the centre of pedestrian side of the path. The lamppost reduces the width of the pedestrian path to 65cm. Check the cycle path before moving onto the right side of the pavement to pass the lamppost.
  • This lamppost is shown in photograph 11.
  • After approximately 40m an uncontrolled road crossing is flanked by two lines of tactile corduroy paving. The crossing and tactile paving is shown in photographs 12, 13 and 14.
  • Continue straight on the left side of the pavement. The path has an even and level tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 70m a line of corduroy tactile paving marks the cycle path and pedestrian path joining, this is shown in photograph 16.

Chestnut Drive Crossing to RHUL Path Entrance

  • Cross Chestnut Drive.
  • This crossing has tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Continue straight along Egham Hill.
  • The path has an even tarmac surface with a slight downhill gradient.
  • After approximately 20m cross the Packhorse car park entrance.
  • This crossing, shown in photograph 4, is level with no tactile paving.
  • The Packhorse is located on the left, approach from the nearside for the ramped entrance.
  • Continue past the Packhorse.
  • The Chestnut Drive bus stop is located directly in front of the Packhorse.
  • This bus stop may cause congestion on the pavement during peak hours.
  • Cross the car park exit on the far side of the Packhorse, shown in photograph 6.
  • Continue along Egham Hill.
  • The path here has an even, tarmac surface with a slight slope.
  • The pavement here was partially obstructed by bins at the time of the survey.
  • After 80m turn into the unmarked brick gateway.
  • This gateway is 112cm wide. The gate has a single heavy door which opens away from you.
  • This is shown in photographs 9 and 10.

RHUL Path Entrance to Katherine Worth Building

  • Head straight along the path.
  • This path has an uneven, level tarmac surface.
  • Sutherland Lodge (shown in photograph 2) is located on the left after approximately 5m.
  • Once past the lodge the path bends to the right.
  • At the end of the path, cross the car park access road.
  • This crossing has a dropped kerb on the near side with no tactile paving and the far side is level with no tactile paving.
  • The crossing is shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • Turn immediately right onto the Kathrine Worth entrance ramp, the main entrance door is located on the left at the top of the ramp.
