Introduction

  • This route is from the Katherine Worth Building to Founders Square. This route is approximately 750m via Egham Hill and takes around 10 minutes to complete by foot.
  • The main hazards along this route are uncontrolled road crossings, ramps and slopes and congested pedestrian areas.

Katherine Worth Building to RHUL Path Entrance

  • Exit the Katherine Worth Building via the entrance ramp on the right as you exit.
  • Turn left at the bottom of the ramp to cross the university access road.
  • This crossing is level on both sides with no tactile paving.
  • Head straight along the path in front.
  • This path is even and level with a tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 30m the Sutherland Lodge is located on the right.
  • Continue along the path for approximately 10m to the Egham Hill (A30) entrance.

RHUL Path Entrance to the Chestnut Drive Crossing

  • Exit the path onto Egham Hill via the brick gateway.
  • This gateway has a single heavy door which opens towards you and is 112cm wide. Turn right onto Egham Hill.
  • Head along Egham Hill for approximately 85m.
  • The pavement here has an even, tarmac surface with a slight gradient.
  • This stretch of the pavement was partially obstructed by bins at the time of the survey.
  • Cross the Packhorse car park exit.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving.
  • Directly in front of the Packhorse there is a bus stop which may cause congestion on the pavement during peak hours.
  • Cross the Packhorse car park entrance.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving.
  • Approach the Packhorse from the left for the accessible entrance.
  • Continue along Egham Hill for approximately 20m to Chestnut Drive.
  • Cross Chestnut Drive.
  • This crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.

Chestnut Drive to RHUL South Pedestrian Entrance (Egham Hill A30)

  • Continue along Egham Hill.
  • After approximately 20m there is a line of corduroy tactile paving marking the splitting of the pedestrian and cycle paths, keep right on the pavement.
  • Continue straight along Egham Hill, the path has an even and level tarmac surface.
  • After 70m there is an uncontrolled road crossing flanked by two lines of corduroy tactile paving.
  • Continue straight along Egham Hill.
  • After approximately 40m a lamppost located on the right of the pavement narrows the pedestrian path to approximately 65cm. Check the cycle pat before moving into the right side of the pavement to pass the lamppost.
  • After approximately 40m there is a line of corduroy tactile paving marking the pedestrian and cycle path joining.
  • Continue along Egham Hill.
  • After approximately 20m the entrance to the George Elliot Halls is located on your right.
  • Turn left after approximately 5m to cross Egham Hill (A30) via the traffic light controlled crossing.
  • This crossing has a level central island and tactile paving and dropped kerbs on both sides.
  • The traffic lights have audible warnings and rotating cones.
  • Turn right after crossing Egham Hill (A30).
  • The pavement here is even and level with a tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 5m there is a line of corduroy tactile paving marking the pedestrian and cycle paths splitting.
  • Turn left after approximately 10m to enter the RHUL South Pedestrian Entrance.

Egham Hill (A30) to University Access Road Windsor Building Crossing

  • The entrance to the Royal Holloway Campus is an open gateway 120cm wide.
  • Head along the path into the campus.
  • This path has a level and even tarmac surface.
  • After approximately 30m cross the university access road.
  • This is a level zebra crossing with no tactile paving.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 3 and 4.
  • Continue along the path.
  • After approximately 30m turn right to follow the pavement alongside the main university access road.
  • The pavement is even and level with a tarmac surface.
  • Continue along the pavement for approximately 35m to the zebra crossing in front of the Windsor Building.

University Access Road Windsor Building Crossing to Founders Square

  • Cross the main university access road.
  • This is a level zebra crossing with tactile paving on the near side only.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Head along the path directly in front bearing to the right along the side of the Windsor Building.
  • Once past the front of the Windsor Building join the path ahead bearing slightly right, shown in photographs 4 and 5.
  • Approximately 30m along the path turn left along the side of the Founders Building.
  • Head for approximately 60m down the path along the side of the Founders Building to the Founders Square.
  • This path is even with a tarmac surface and a slight downhill gradient.

Founders Square

  • The Founders Square is an open events space located between the Emily Wilding Davison Building and the Founders Building.
  • This area is accessed via steps or ramps from the Emily Wilding Davison Building, by ramped access from the north of the campus and stepped access only from the south.
  • This area has a level and even stone slab surface.
  • This area contains a wide open space lined with bench seating on three sides (as shown in photographs 5 and 6) and by a tiered stone bench seating array on the north side of the square. This tiered seating is access via 15+, medium height steps with handrails on the left only.
