Useful Information

Introduction

  • This route leads from the Sports Centre to the Founders Square. This route is approximately 700m via the Runnymede, Tuke, Williamson and Butler accommodation halls, The Hub, Arts Building, the Emily Wilding Davison Building, the Union Shop and Windsor Building.
  • The main hazards along this route are uncontrolled road crossings, steep slopes and congested pavements.

The Sports Centre to the Sports Centre Car Park

  • Exit the Sports Centre to the left and head between the Sports Centre and Sports Hall towards the Sports Centre Car Park.
  • The pavement here is level and even with a concrete slab surface, becoming tarmac with a slight uphill gradient between the two buildings with handrails on both sides, as shown in photographs 2 and 3.
  • After approximately 5m turn right and follow the path along the rear of the Sports Hall.
  • There is a short slight ramp (shown in photograph 4) at the start of this path, with a handrail on the right only.
  • The path is even and level with a tarmac surface and is 120cm wide and was partially obstructed by parked cars at the time of the survey as shown in photograph 5.
  • Turn left after approximately 15m heading away from the Sports Hall.
  • After another 5m cross the Sports Centre car park.
  • This is a zebra crossing has a dropped kerb on the nearside and is level on the far side with tactile paving on both.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 7, 8 and 9.
  • Follow the path leading slightly to the right.

Sports Centre Car Park to Runnymede Hall 1

  • Continue along the path for approximately 90m.
  • This path is an even tarmac surface with a steep uphill gradient.
  • At the end of the path exit ahead into the road.
  • This is via a dropped kerb, shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • Turn right on entering the road.
  • After approximately 30m there is a speed bump located in the road causing a short steep ramp, this is shown in photograph 8.
  • After approximately 20m cross the car park 8 access road.
  • This is shown in photograph 10.
  • Continue along the right side of the road.
  • The road here has a tarmac surface with a steep gradient.
  • After approximately 30m enter the pavement on the right via a short steep ramp and tactile paving shown in photographs 13 and 14.

Runnymede Hall 1 to The Hub

  • Turn left onto the path.
  • This path has an even tarmac surface with a slight gradient leading uphill.
  • After approximately 15m the pavement bends to the right around two parking spaces and continues in the same direction, as shown in photographs 2, 3 and 4.
  • Continue along the path in front of the Runnymede 2 Block V.
  • The path here changes to block paving with a steep uphill slope.
  • After 10m from the Runnymede 2 Block V entrance turn left to cross the university access road.
  • This crossing is at a slight angle to the right.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 6 and 7.
  • Turn right after crossing.
  • The pavement here has an even tarmac surface with a slight uphill gradient.
  • The pavement immediately bends around a loading bay set on the side of the road, shown in photographs 8 and 9.
  • Continue along the pavement, after approximately 10m beyond the loading bay a single Blue Badge bay is set on the left of the pavement.
  • Continue along the pavement in front of the Tuke accommodation building.
  • After approximately 45m cross the Car Park 6A access road.
  • This crossing is level with tactile paving on both sides.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 12 and 13.
  • Continue straight beyond the crossing, The Hub main entrance is located on your left.

The Hub to the Wooded Path

  • Continue straight to cross The Hub car park entrance.
  • This crossing is level with tactile paving on both sides.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 1 and 2.
  • Continue straight along the pavement.
  • There is a dropped kerb with tactile paving (shown in photograph 3) on the right of the pavement, this crossing leads to the Butler, Williamson and Reid accommodation blocks.
  • After approximately 5m, a steep downhill slope (shown in photograph 4) is located in the pavement.
  • Continue along the pavement.
  • After the path levels out, cross The Hub car park exit.
  • This crossing is level with tactile paving on both sides.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 5 and 6.
  • Cross the access road directly in front of you, this access road leads to the Gower and Wedderburn accommodation blocks.
  • This crossing is level with tactile paving on both sides.
  • This crossing is shown in photographs 7 and 8.
  • After crossing continue down the path straight ahead.
  • Follow the path to the left after approximately 5m, passing along the side of the Electron Microscopy Unit.
  • Follow the path for approximately 60m to the junction along the wooded path.
  • Turn right to follow the path towards the Arts Building (the path straight ahead leads to the Jane Holloway Hall).
  • Follow the path for approximately 60m.
  • The path has an even tarmac surface with a steep uphill gradient.

Wooded Path to Founders Square

  • Exit the path on to the tarmac area.
  • Cross the tarmac area directly ahead towards the Arts Building.
  • Turn left after crossing and head between the Arts Building and the Emily Wilding Davison Building.
  • The path here has an even tarmac surface with a slight uphill gradient.
  • After approximately 70m, at the corner of the Arts Building turn left to cross the access road.
  • Cross the road towards the Emily Wilding Davison Building.
  • This crossing is level with no tactile paving.
  • On the far side of the crossing there is a double line of low level planters, marking the edge of the pavement from the access road.
  • The low level planters, shown in photographs 7 and 8, are approximately 3m apart.
  • Head straight along the edge of the Emily Wilding Davison Building, past the Union Shop.
  • The path here has an even and level stone slab surface.
  • After approximately 50m enter the Founders Square by the ramp and sloped access to the square, located in front of the Emily Wilding Davison Building.
  • There are 12 well marked, medium depth steps with central handrails and tactile paving at the top and bottom of the steps.
  • The ramp leads through steps from the top right corner to the left halfway down the steps and then back to the bottom right corner of the steps.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient, no handrails and is poorly marked and edged by steps.
  • The ramp and steps are shown in photographs 10, 11 and 12.

Founders Square

  • The Founders Square is an open events space located between the Emily Wilding Davison Building and the Founders Building.
  • This area is accessed via steps or ramps from the Emily Wilding Davison Building, by ramped access from the north of the campus and stepped access only from the south.
  • This area has a level and even stone slab surface.
  • This area contains a wide open space lined with bench seating on three sides (as shown in photographs 5 and 6) and by a tiered stone bench seating array on the north side of the square. This tiered seating is access via 15+, medium height steps with handrails on the left only.
