Access Guide
Introduction
- This route runs from Earlsfield Overground Station to the Hunter Wing. This route is roughly 1.6 miles long. The majority of the route is along Garrett Lane which has many road crossings.
Earlsfield Station to Waynflete Street
- Once you exit the station, turn left and begin to head along Garrett Lane.
- The path has a slabbed surface and is mostly level with some places that are uneven.
- After 18 meters you will come to a road crossing which has a set of traffic lights.
- The button to change the lights is on both the left and right hand sides of the crossing and both buttons have a height of 105cm.
- The crossing has a dropped kerb on either side and both have tactile paving.
- Once you cross the road, continue along Garrett Lane for 150 meters.
- The surface of the path at this point still has a slabbed surface which is fairly even with a very slight slope towards the road.
- After 70 meters along this path, there is a small, quiet crossing which is has a blocked paving surface and is very uneven on either side of the crossing. There is a drain cover sticking out and the paving around it has sunk and left other bits unsteady and wobbly.
- Once you pass this point, continue to head along Garrett Lane for the remaining 80 meters.
- There are various obstacles along this path, including phone boxes, bins, signs and bus stops which do slightly restrict the width of the path.
- After the 80 meters you will come to another road crossing which is Waynflete Street. This crossing has a dropped kerb and tactile paving on both sides.
Waynflete Street to Waldron Road
- Cross Waynflete Street and stick to Garrett Lane where the path continues to have a block paving surface which is uneven in places and has a very slight slope towards the road.
- There are also some obstruction on the path outside shops and other obstructions on the road side of the path which do not affect the width of the path too much.
- After 50 meters you will come to another road crossing.
- Cross Isis Street using the dropped kerbs, which have tactile paving on both sides, and then continue along Garrett Lane.
- This part of the path is relatively level and doesn’t have more obstructions along it.
- After 60 more meters you will come to a second road crossing, Quinton Street, which has both dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- Once across this road, continue to head along Garrett Lane.
- The path is still level with a slabbed surface, but the path does become narrower due to on-street parking and additional signs to give the drivers information.
- A further 60 meters along this road, you come to another road crossing.
- Cross Littleton Street using the dropped kerbs, which have tactile paving and then continue along Garrett Lane.
- After roughly 40 meters, there is a bus stop on the path which restricts the width of the path down to 140cm but only for the length of the bus stop which is roughly 2 meters.
- After this, continue along the road for a further 20 meters until you reach Waldron Road.
- Waldron Road has a uneven dropped kerb on either side and neither of the have tactile paving.
Waldron Road to Burmester Road
- Once you cross Waldron Road, continue along Garrett Lane for 35 meters until you reach Freshford Street.
- Between these two roads, the surface of the path has a mixture of slabs and block paving, both of which are mostly level but does have a slight slope towards the road.
- The crossing of Freshford Street has dropped kerbs on both sides but neither side has tactile paving.
- Cross the road and follow the path for a further 55 meters until you reach a main road, called Burntwood Lane.
- This crossing has a set of traffic lights and a push button box to change them,
- The height of the push button is 105cm.
- There are rotating cones located at the base of the push button boxes to indicate when it is safe to cross.
- Cross Burntwood Lane and continue along Garrett Lane.
- Follow the path for another 75 meters until coming to another crossing.
- Along this path, there is a dropped kerb coming off the road for a driveway which causes the path to have a slight dip in. This is clearly visible as the surface changes to block paving.
- The rest of the path has a level slabbed surface which had some obstructions such as tree, bins, bollards and shop signs.
- Once you reach Franche Court Road, there are dropped kerbs on either side but no tactile paving.
- Cross this road and continue along Garrett Lane.
- After another 50 meters, you come to another road crossing.
- This road is called Aldren Road and this road has a level crossing which has tactile paving on either side.
- Cross this road and follow Garrett Lane for another 50 meters.
- The path at this point bends round to the left, follow the curve until you come to Burmester Road.
- The path here changes from a slabbed surface to block paving which is mostly level but has a very slight slope towards the road.
- Once at Burmester Road, there are dropped kerbs on either side but no tactile paving.
Burmester Road to Aboyne Road
- Once you cross Burmester Road, follow Garrett Lane for 80 meters until you come to Huntspill Street crossing.
- On the path leading there, there is a block paving surface which is mostly level with places that are uneven. There are also obstacles on the path which restricts the width of the path such as trees, bus stops, bins and posts as well as entrances to drive ways which cause the path to dip.
- The road also bends round to the left.
- At the road crossing, there are dropped kerbs on either side which don’t have any tactile paving.
- Cross this road and head straight for 30 meters until you come to Bellew Street.
- Cross this road using the dropped kerbs which do not have tactile paving.
- Then after 12 meters you come to Aboyne Road.
- This road has a level crossing with tactile paving on either side.
- There is a pedestrian island in the middle of the road, which also has tactile paving.
Aboyne Road to Garrett Lane Zebra Crossing
- Cross this road and follow Garrett Lane to the right, past the round-a-bout and as it bends round to the left.
- After 70 meters there is a small crossing that accesses a privet house, there are dropped kerbs on either side.
- At this point, the path has a block paving surface which is mostly level which changes to a slabbed surface further on.
- Continue along Garrett Lane for roughly 100 meters until you come to the entrance to the cemetery.
- There is a dropped kerb directly in front of you or the path bends round to the left and there is a second crossing right in front of the entrance gates which is a lot shorter than the first option.
- Cross the road and continue along Garrett Lane.
- There are some fixed obstructions along the path which restricts the width of the path such as bus stops, bins and lampposts.
- After a further 60 meters, the cemetery wall comes to the end and you come to the zebra crossing on the right hand side.
Garrett Lane Zebra Crossing to Fountain Road
- Once at the zebra crossing, use it to cross Garrett Lane.
- The crossing has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides, as well as a pedestrian island in the centre of the road.
- Once you cross the road, turn left and carry on along Garrett Lane.
- The path has a slightly uneven slabbed surface at this point.
- Follow the path for 25 meters until you come to Rostella Road.
- Cross the road using the dropped kerbs, which have tactile paving on both sides.
- Continue along the path for another 36 meters until coming to the next road crossing.
- Cross Khartoum Road, which has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on either sides.
- Follow Garrett lane along for another 30 meters until coming to the third road crossing.
- This is Fairlight Road, which has dropped kerbs but no tactile paving.
- Once across this road, continue along Garrett Lane.
- At this point, there are obstructions along the path (a bus stop and phone box) which restricts the width of the path.
- Follow the path past these for another 30 meters until coming to another road.
Fountain Road to Hunter Wing
- Follow Fountain Road along until coming to a crossing on your left after roughly 160 meters.
- Along this path, the surface is mostly slabbed and level, except from access to drive ways which have slopes on either side and a block paved surface.
- There are also some obstructions which include lampposts and telephone poles.
- At the crossing, there is are dropped kerbs with tactile paving and a pedestrian island in the centre of the road which also has tactile paving.
- Once across the road, turn right and follow the path along for 40 meters until coming to a round-a-bout.
- At this point, turn left onto Cranmer Terrace.
- Follow this road along for 70 meters until coming to the entrance gate to the hospital grounds.
- The path has a slabbed surface which is mostly level but does have some uneven places.
- Enter through the gate and continue along the path.
- At this point the surface changes to an uneven concrete surface.
- As the path begins to bend round to the left, there is a zebra crossing on the right hand side which has dropped kerbs and tactile paving on both sides.
- Cross the road and turn slightly to the left and follow the path up to the front of the Hunter Wing.
- There is a slight slope that leads up to the building and bollards at the bottom of the slope which have a width of 140 cm.
- Follow the slope for 20 meters until you reach the building entrance.
