Road from Car Park to Causeway Slipway on the Guernsey Side

  • The road from the Car Park leading to the Causeway Slipway is at the front right of the Car Park. (Photograph 1 and 2)
  • The road has very little traffic as vehicles without express permission are not allowed to use the Causeway or Slipway.
  • The road is tarmac.
  • The road has a steep slope down towards the Causeway Slipway(Photograph 3)
  • The Causeway Slipway is at the end of the road. (photograph 4).

Causeway Slipway, Guernsey Side

  • Notice Board:-
  • The Causeway starts at the end of the road leading from the Car Park.
  • On the road, on the left, just before the Causeway there is a noticeboard. (Photograph 1).
  • The noticeboard gives information on the Island and Causeway.
  • At the bottom right of the noticeboard is a timetable of the tide times. (Photograph 2).
  • This timetable will tell you the safe times to cross the Causeway.
  • Do not cross the Causeway outside of these times as there is a severe danger of being stranded on the Island or being washed away by the extremely strong incoming tides and currents.
  • It is advised to allow 20 to 30 minutes to cross the Causeway. Please make allowances for this when calculating the tide times.
  • Slipway:-
  • The Slipway consists of gravel to start and then becomes cobbled. (Photographs 3 to 5).
  • The cobbles have gaps and there is drifted seaweed on the cobbles, both of these could cause a slip/trip hazard. (Photograph 6).
  • There is a steep slope leading down the Slipway from the road to the Causeway. The Slipway also has a steep camber on the left and right. (Photographs 7 and 8).
  • There are no handrails on the Slipway and there is a drop on either side to the Beach below. (Photographs 9 and 10).
  • At the end of the Slipway there is a build up of drifted seaweed, at times this can become deep and the location and depth of seaweed will vary with each tide. (Photograph 11).
  • The Slipway leads directly to the Causeway. (photograph 12).

Causeway in the Direction of Guernsey to Lihou Island

  • The beginning of the Causeway is sand and compacted/loose pebbles.
  • (Photographs 1 and 2).
  • There are rocks and loose pebbles that could cause a trip hazard. (Photographs 3 and 4).
  • Some areas of the path are still under a small amount of water, approximately 1cm deep. (Photograph 5).
  • As you continue along the Causeway there are many slight and steep slopes. (Photographs 6 and 7).
  • As you continue along, the Causeway becomes cobbles. (Photograph 8).
  • The cobbled pathway is extremely uneven due to the cobbles and there is a serious trip hazard. (Photographs 9 and 10).
  • In some areas the Causeway has a lip at the left or right with a 2cm drop to the seabed. (Photographs 11 and 12).
  • Some areas of the cobbled path are submerged with trapped sea water. (Photograph 13).
  • The cobbled area of the Causeway has bends to the left and then the right before the cobbled area finishes.
  • At the end of the cobbled path, there is a medium height step down to the Causeway. (Photograph 14).
  • At this point the causeway becomes the seabed which contains rocks and pebbles that could create a trip hazard. (Photograph 15).
  • Some areas of this part of the causeway are submerged and the water can be a few cm deep in areas. (Photograph 16).
  • The causeway turns to the left and then to the right and then becomes cobbled again. (Photograph 17).
  • There is a steep slope going upwards at this point. The causeway also cambers to the left and right. (Photographs 18 and 19).
  • The path then turns to the left and then the right before reaching the beach on Lihou Island. (Photographs 20 and 21).
  • As the causeway reaches the beach there is a mass of drifted seaweed. The depth of the seaweed can vary depending on the tides but can become up to 2m deep. (Photographs 22 and 23).
  • The beach on Lihou Island side is now directly ahead, as the causeway ends. (Photograph 24).
  • At times there is a tractor and trailer using the causeway, the tractor takes up most of the causeway and manoeuvring out of its way can be difficult. (Photographs 25 and 26).

Beach and Approach Path on Lihou Island Side to Lihou House

  • Beach:-
  • The Beach starts as shale but very quickly becomes sand. (Photographs 1 and 2).
  • There are some large rocks on the Beach that may create a trip hazard (Photograph 3).
  • There is an extremely steep slope upwards from the Beach to Lihou House, there are many large rocks along this slope. (Photographs 4 and 5).
  • The sand here is extremely dry and soft and may cause manoeuvring issues.
  • At the top of the steep slope the Beach ends and the pathway to Lihou House begins. (Photograph 6).
  • Approach Path to Lihou House:-
  • The approach path has some areas that are loose sand, some areas are gravel and there are some areas with grass in the middle of the path. (Photographs 7 and 8).
  • The approach path slopes steeply upwards towards Lihou House (Photographs 9 and 10).
  • There are many large rocks on the approach path and some gulley's were the tractor has worn the approach path away. (Photographs 11 to 14).
  • The approach path now leads up to Lihou house. (Photographs 15 and 16).

Outside Access (Lihou House Main Entrance)
