Access Guide
Introduction
- This guide is based in Lowestoft, Suffolk and is a route from the Claremont Pier, just south of the town centre, running along the upper and lower promenade and ending by Pakefield Road Car Park.
This guide covers the walkways along the seafront.
The pathways have some uneven sections.
There are opportunities to sit and rest.
Getting Here
- By Car
- The A12/A47 is approximately 0.5 miles away from Claremont Pier to the north of the route via B1532 Marine Parade. These roads give you direct links to Great Yarmouth to the north and Ipswich to the south.
- Parking
- There is limited street Blue Badge parking and standard parking available on surrounding side roads. There are several public car parks available along the route also.
- By Bus
- There are several bus stops along most of the route nearby on B1532 Marine Parade with direct services available to Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Norwich, Diss and Lowestoft.

- By Train
- Lowestoft Station is located on Denmark Road, approximately 0.7 miles from Claremont Pier, directly north of the route.
- There is step-free access to all platforms at this station via lift.
- There are direct train services available to Ipswich, Norwich and London Liverpool Street.

Parking
- On Street Parking
- There are limited Blue Badge and standard on street parking bays on surrounding side roads.
- There is no charge for these parking bays.
- Parking is limited to between 60 minutes for non-Blue Badge holders depending on the parking area.
- Blue Badge holders may park in any of the bays for a maximum of 2 hours.

- Pakefield Road Car Park

- Kirkley Cliff Car Park
- This is a pay and display car park.
- Claremont Pier Car Park
- This is a pay and display car park.
Junction – Claremont Pier, Claremont Road and Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This is where Claremont Pier Car Park, Claremont Pier and Claremont Road meet.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete, tarmac and block paving.
- There is a very slight slope downhill from right to left as you exit Claremont Road onto the promenade and face the Claremont Pier.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as signboards, bins, seating and advertisements.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Claremont Pier to South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets via Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This section covers the Lower Promenade between the Claremont Pier and South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and tarmac.
- There is a steep downhill slope leading from Claremont Pier towards South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as signboards, bins and seating.
- There will be access to several beach huts and some vendors along the route.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Claremont Pier to South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets via Upper Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This section covers the Upper Promenade between the Claremont Pier and South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete, tarmac and block paving.
- There is a very slight slope uphill leading from Claremont Pier towards South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as bins and lampposts.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Junction – South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets and Ramp/Steps between Upper and Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This is where Upper and Lower Promenade meet the South Beach Shelter and Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete, tarmac and block paving.
- There is a steep ramp leading uphill from the Lower Promenade to the Upper Promenade.
- The ramp has handrails on the left and right which interchange going up.
- There is no tactile paving but the ramp does having resting areas.
- The pathways are narrow and can be uneven in parts.
- South Beach Shelter in on the Upper Promenade and is a seating area without handrails with views out to sea.
- The Public Toilets are on the Lower Promenade and there is an accessible toilet and standard toilets available.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets to Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach Via Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This section covers the Lower Promenade between the South Beach Shelter/Public Toilet and Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and tarmac.
- There is a steep ramp leading uphill from the Lower Promenade to the Upper Promenade close to Sandy Toes Ice Cream Stall.
- The ramp has a handrail on the right and no tactile paving.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as bins and seating.
- There will be access to several beach huts and some vendors along the route.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets to Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach Via Upper Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This section covers the Upper Promenade between the South Beach Shelter/Public Toilet and Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete.
- There are some slight slopes uphill and downhill throughout the section.
- There is a very slight slope along the Upper Promenade from South Beach Shelter/Public Toilets to the Lowestoft Beach Huts.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as seating, bins and lampposts.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Junction – Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach and Ramp/Steps between Upper and Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This is where Upper and Lower Promenade meet the Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and tarmac.
- There is a steep ramp leading uphill from the Lower Promenade to the Upper Promenade, this is between Beach Huts 82 and 83.
- The ramp has handrails on the left and right that interchange going up, no tactile paving, but does having resting areas.
- There are multiple ramps to access the Upper Promenade, which are all steep.
- The pathways are wide and narrow and can be uneven in parts.
- There are 3 unmarked steps without handrails at the bottom of one of the ramps.
- There are 7 unmarked steps with a handrail on the left going up in between the ramps.
Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach to Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets via Lower Promenade
- This section covers the Lower Promenade between Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach and Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and tarmac.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as seating and bins.
- There will be access to several beach huts and some vendors along the route.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach to Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets via Upper Promenade
- This section covers the Upper Promenade between Lowestoft Beach Huts/South Beach and Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as seating and lampposts.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Junction – Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets and Ramp/Steps between Upper and Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This is where Upper and Lower Promenade meet the Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete, tarmac and block paving.
- There are 15+ steps with handrails on both sides leading between the Upper and Lower Promenade.
- There is no tactile paving on the steps and they are not clearly marked.
- There is a slight ramp that has handrails on the left going up immediately after the steps.
- There is no tactile paving on the ramp but it does having resting areas.
- There are an additional 15+ unmarked steps with a handrail in the centre to access the Upper Promenade.
- The pathways are wide and narrow and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as signboards, seating and advertisements.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
- There is a café available called Sunrise at Zak's.
- There are standard toilets available here.
Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets to Eastern Edge Beach Huts/Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade via Lower Promenade
- This section covers the Lower Promenade between Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets to Eastern Edge Beach Huts/Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and tarmac.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as seating and bins.
- There will be access to several beach huts and some vendors along the route.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets to Eastern Edge Beach Huts/Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade via Upper Promenade
- This section covers the Upper Promenade between Sunrise at Zak's/Public Toilets to Eastern Edge Beach Huts/Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete.
- There is a very slight uphill slope throughout the section.
- The pathways are wide and can be uneven in parts.
- There is bench seating available throughout.
Junction – Eastern Edge Beach Huts and Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This is where Upper and Lower Promenade meet the Eastern Edge Beach Huts.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete.
- There is a steep ramp leading uphill from the Lower Promenade to the Upper Promenade, this is located close to Eastern Edge Lodging.
- The ramp has handrails on the left and right that interchange as you go up.
- There is no tactile paving at the ramp.
- There are steps with handrails on the left between the Upper and Lower Promenade.
- There is no tactile paving on the steps, they are not clearly marked out and there are 9 steps.
- There is an additional slope/ramp leading to the Upper Promenade which is very steep and has no handrails.
- The pathways are narrow and can be uneven in parts.
- There are resting areas available throughout.
- There are also 15+ unmarked steps to access the Upper Promenade from the Lower Promenade with a handrail in the centre.
Eastern Edge Beach Huts/Ramp between Upper and Lower Promenade to Pakefield Road Car Park via Footpath - Pedestrian Only and Authorised Vehicles
- This section covers the footpath between the Upper and Lower Promenade to Pakefield Road Car Park and Pakefield Road.
- This area is for pedestrians and authorised vehicles only.
- The only vehicles you will likely see are emergency vehicles, road trains (taking passengers along the promenade for a fee) and service vehicles.
- The pathways are concrete and paving slabs.
- There are some slight slopes uphill and downhill throughout the section.
- The pathways are narrow in most parts (below 130cm).
- There are some obstructions along the pathways such as signboards and seating.
- There is bench seating available.
- There is a slight to steep downwards slope towards the car park.
Accessible Toilet
- There are public toilets available along the route at locations stated above in the streetscape. The accessible toilets are located near the South Beach Shelter.
- There is a steep slope with no handrails off the promenade to access the South Beach Shelter public toilets.
- There are also 4 unmarked steps with a handrail on the left to access the toilets off the promenade.
Standard Toilet
- There are public standard toilets available along the route at locations stated above in the streetscape. The toilets are located near the South Beach Shelter and close to Kensington Gardens.
- There is a steep slope with no handrails off the promenade to access the South Beach Shelter public toilets.
- There are also 4 unmarked steps with a handrail on the left to access the toilets off the promenade.
- The public toilets at Sunrise at Zak's café have stepped access off the promenade that do not have handrails.
- There is also a slight ramp with a handrail on the left off the promenade to access the toilets.
