Bactrian Camels

  • The Bactrian Camel enclosure is located in the centre of the zoo. The indoor portion of the enclosure is accessed via double doors which open towards you (pull), are 115cm wide, and are permanently held open. There is a steep slope with a handrail on the right going up to access this indoor area.
  • The outdoor paddock can be viewed from a tarmac path or grassed area.
  • Information boards are easy to read and presented in contrasting colours, but some may be positioned too high for a wheelchair user to read.

Birds of Prey Display

  • The Birds of Prey Display area is located in the far south-eastern corner of the zoo. The area is closed off except for when a Birds of Prey Display is taking place. The timings and frequency of these displays vary by date and season - please see website for details.
  • The area contains terraced bench seating where visitors watch the displays, accessed by deep steps. Handrails are on the left only, right only or centre only, depending on which fight of steps you use. There is designated seating for disabled people in the front row, which has step-free access. There is also space for wheelchair users to park here (photographs 3 and 4).

Chilean Flamingos Walk-Through

  • The Chilean Flamingo Walk-Through is located in the western portion of the zoo. There are two single width gates next to each other to access the enclosure, both of which are over 75cm wide. One opens towards you, the other away from you. They are both hard to open (heavy). There is a slight slope of loose chippings through the enclosure with no handrails. There is step-free access through the enclosure, although disease control disinfection mats are places at either end of the walk-through, which may pose a trip hazard. The exit gates have similar specifications to the entrance. There are hand sanitiser dispensers at both ends of the walk-through at a height of 90cm.
  • Information boards are clearly written, presented in contrasting colours, and at a suitable height for wheelchair users.

Discovery Centre for Conservation Education

  • The Discovery Centre for Conservation Education is located in the centre of the zoo. There are double doors (with one leaf locked) to access the centre, with an opening width of 84cm. They open towards you (pull) and are hard to open (heavy).
  • The centre houses a number of smaller animals, as well as information about wildlife and conservation which is predominantly aimed at children. There is flooring with a shiny finish throughout which could be perceived as slippery. Lighting levels are moderate to good, and all information boards are clearly written, presented in contrasting colours, and at a suitable height for a wheelchair user to read.

Discovery Amazing Animals Theatre

  • The Discovery Theatre, also known as the Amazing Animals Theatre, is located in the far south-eastern portion of the zoo. There are double doors which open towards you (pull) to enter the foyer of the building, which are hard to open (heavy) and have an opening width of 164cm. The foyer houses tortoises and iguanas, which are viewed through glazed screens. Information boards are clearly written, presented in contrasting colours, and at a suitable height for wheelchair users to read. There is concrete flooring here, along with picnic tables for seating, and moderate to good lighting levels.
  • There are then further double doors with an opening width of 162cm to enter the theatre from the foyer. These open away from you (push) and are permanently held open before and after a show (the theatre is locked at all other times).
  • There is tiered flip-down seating in the theatre, all of which (apart from the front row) is accessed by clearly marked deep steps with no handrails. The front row is clearly marked and reserved for use by disabled persons and their companions. There is also ample room in the theatre for wheelchair users to position themselves to watch events.
  • The theatre hosts a variety of demonstrations and talks on wildlife and conservation. These take place at varying times throughout the day and year - please see website for more details.

Farm Barn

  • The Farm Barn is located in the north eastern portion of the zoo, near the main entrance. It is an area aimed at young children, and houses a variety of farm animals. The doors to the barn are over 150cm wide and permanently held open. There is a level concrete floor inside. Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • Outside the barn, there is a walk-through petting enclosure. The gates to this are single, manual, heavy and 115 cm wide. They open away from you (push).
  • There are hand washing facilities in the barn. Sinks have push taps and are 69cm and 85cm high. Soap dispensers are 83cm and 99cm high. The hand dryer is 102cm high.

Giraffe House and Walkway

  • The Giraffe House and Walkway is located to the south of the zoo. There are double, manual, heavy doors which open both ways on the lower and upper levels of the building. They have an opening width of 163cm.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good, and there is tiled flooring with a shiny finish inside the building. There are interactive touchscreens on the ground floor, which are situated between 105 and 131cm from the floor. Information boards are clearly written and presented in contrasting colours, but may not be at a suitable height for wheelchair users to read.
  • There are 15+ medium height clearly marked steps with handrails on both sides between the lower and upper level of the Giraffe House. They are bypassed by a platform lift, but this was out of order when surveyed (August 2023).
  • The Walkway has a decked surface with handrails on both sides, slightly sloping up to the upper level of the Giraffe House from ground level, over a distance greater than 100m. It provides views of the Giraffe outdoor paddock.

Maned Wolves

  • The Maned Wolves are located in the south-east portion of the zoo, between the Chilean Pudu toilet block and the Discovery Theatre. There is a sheltered viewing hut with no doors, where the enclosure can be seen through glazed screens. Information boards are clearly written and presented in contrasting colours, but may not be at a suitable height for wheelchair users to read.
  • There is an interactive screen at a height of 122-142cm, with buttons at 116cm from the ground.

Penguin Cove

  • Penguin Cove, housing the Humboldt Penguins, is a walk-through enclosure located in the northern portion of the zoo. There are two sets of single, manual entrance doors, which open away from you (push), are 83cm wide, and are hard to open (heavy). They are activated by a push button which is 121cm high. There are disinfection mats next to the entrance and exit doors, which have similar specifications. There is a slight ramp within the enclosure with handrails on both sides. There is a hand sanitiser dispenser by the exit at a height of 82cm. After leaving the walk-through, there is an interactive touchscreen between 107cm and 135cm from the ground. There is then a steep slope with no handrails to exit the area.

Snow Leopards

  • The Snow Leopards are located in the southern portion of the zoo. There is a level tarmac path around the outdoor part of the enclosure. The indoor part of the enclosure is viewed through glazed screens under a canopy. This area contains some interactive "Lift the Flaps" information boards, which are positioned 12-120cm from ground level. Information boards are clearly written and presented in contrasting colours, but may not be positioned at a suitable height for a wheelchair user to read.

Tropical House

  • The Tropical House is located in the centre of the zoo. It is a walk-through exhibit housing tropical birds, sloths and more. There are double, manual, heavy doors to enter and exit the building. They open away from you (push) and have an opening width of 158cm. There are disinfection mats and plastic curtains at both the entrance and exit.
  • There is a slight ramp over a humpback bridge on the path through the exhibit, which has handrails on both sides. Bench seating is available, and the path has a concrete and wooden decked surface. Information boards are clearly written, presented in contrasting colours, and at a suitable height for wheelchair users to read.
  • By the exit, there are hand washing facilities. Sinks have push taps and are located at 69cm and 85cm from the floor, with the soap dispenser at 99cm from the floor. The hand dryer is 130cm high. There are also hand sanitisers by both the entrance and exit doors at a height of 94cm.

Wallaby Walk-Through

  • The Wallaby Walk-Through is located in the western portion of the zoo. There are two sets of single, manual, heavy doors which open away from you (push) to enter and exit the enclosure. They are 77cm wide and activated by door release buttons at a height of 124cm. At the entrance, there is a hand sanitiser dispenser at a height of 101cm; at the exit there is one at a height of 80cm. There are wash basins with push taps at the exit, 82cm and 70cm high. The soap dispenser is at a height of 102cm and the hand dryer at a height of 115cm.
  • The path through the walk-through enclosure is level with a surface of loose chippings. Information boards are clearly written, presented in contrasting colours, and at a suitable height for a wheelchair user to read.

Woodland Walk

  • The Woodland Walk is located in the north-western portion of the zoo. There is a compacted gravel path through the area with slight slopes, which do not have handrails. The path may be covered with leaf litter. There is a shelter with bench seating to rest along the route. Areas of the woods are designated for children to play in, with activities such as den building available - parents and guardians must supervise children at all times.

Changing Places

  • Location and Access View
    • The facility is located in the centre of the zoo, next to the Discovery Centre for Conservation Education.
    • The facility is approximately 185m (202yd 11in) from the Main Entrance.
    • The facility is in addition to standard and accessible toilets.
