Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • Grant Institute has one entrance, excluding staff only entrances.
  • That is the main entrance at the front which is signed as the Accessible Entrance.
    It provides step-free access via ramps with very slight gradients and manual doors.
  • The Accessible Entrance gives access to Level 2.
  • There are two other staff entrances to the rear of the building, providing access to Level 1, but these would only be used by key code holders.
    One of these entrances gives access to a restricted area that was closed to staff at the time of the survey. Both of these entrances are unnamed and have step-free access, one via a steep ramp, and have manual doors.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building.
  • On Level 1, Rooms 137 - 146 are accessed via 5 clearly marked steps.
  • At the time of the survey, a section of Level 1 was closed to staff and students for ongoing works.
  • The North and South Attics (staff offices) are accessed via 20+ steps only.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are some seating areas in circulation routes including a sofa and two armchairs in the entrance foyer.
  • Wayfinding signage is limited in this building. There is some overhead signage above room entrances.
  • There are manual doors throughout circulation corridors.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • There are 2 toilets with adaptations.
  • Toilets with adaptations are located on Levels 1 and 2.
  • All toilets with adaptations have a left hand transfer space.
  • Ambulant toilet facilities are located in the male and female standard toilets on Levels 1 and 2.
  • The male and female toilet facilities are located on Levels 1 and 2.
  • Standard shower facilities are located in some of the male and female standard toilets.

  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
  • The ramp bypasses the steps.
  • There are 3 steps with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The steps have tactile markings at the top and bottom.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm .
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The door opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 126cm.

Counter (Servitors Window)
