About
View
- The Nancy Rothwell Building is a very large rectangular building with eight floors.
- The building has four clearly signed areas (Cores 1-4) where identical banks of lifts and self contained stairwells are located.
- The floors are signed as Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
This is slightly different inside the lifts where control buttons are marked as 0 instead of Ground and -1 instead of Basement. - There is internal step-free access between the Nancy Rothwell Building and Engineering Building B via a sloped link bridge on the second floor.
There is also step-free level access between the Nancy Rothwell Building and Engineering Building B on the basement floor.
Cores 5 and 6 are located in Engineering Building B.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the building is step-free and level.
- There are some bollards, with a high colour contrast, on the approach to the building.
- The Nancy Rothwell Building has three entrances. All three entrances provide step-free level access to the ground floor.
There are push pad activated, single automatic doors available at all three entrances (the alternative being manual revolving doors). - The entrances are signed as South, North and East.
- The South Entrance is located off Booth Street East and is the closest entrance to Core 4
The North Entrance is located in Grosvenor Street and is the closest entrance to Core 1. The East Entrance is located in Rumford Street and is the closest entrance to Core 3. - Internal access from Engineering Building B is via a sloped link bridge on the second floor with a slight gradient.
Getting Around
- There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
- However, there is restricted (key card) access between Cores 1 to 4 on some floors (particularly floors 4-6).
- Therefore, it may be necessary to use a specific core lift to access some rooms or services if they are in a restricted area.
- Signage is provided to help with this.
- Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
- Overhead and wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
Information boards are also provided with journey times and details on which core lifts to use for specific rooms and services. - There are manual doors to access core lobbies where toilets, stairs and lifts are located.
Toilet and Changing Facilities
- There are 10+ toilets with adaptations.
- Toilets with adaptations are located on all floors.
- The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
- Ambulant toilet facilities are located in the majority of male and female standard toilets.
- The male and female toilet facilities are located on all floors.
- The gender neutral toilet facilities are located on all floors, in Core 3.
- The Changing Places toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, near the North Entrance.
- Parent and baby changing facilities are located on the first floor, in Core 3.

- The car park is located off Booth Street East, close to the South Entrance.

Lift (Core 2)
- The lift surveyed is located in Core 2.
- The distance from the North Entrance is 75m.

- All floors (Basement, Ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) are accessed by this lift.
- The lift door has a low visual contrast.
- The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).

- All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.

- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- There are identical stairwells in Cores 1, 3 and 4.
