Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via a steep ramp. This ramp bypasses 6 steps with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The entrance to the building is at the rear. Visitors are directed from the front of the building to this entrance.
  • Gordon Square 21 has two entrances.
  • The main entrance is located at the rear of the building and provides access via a steep ramp, a single 8cm step and a single manual door.
  • The front entrance is not used and has stepped access via a manual door. Visitors are directed to the rear of the building on approach to the front of the building.
  • The main entrance is signed as 21 Gordon Square and provides step-free ramped access to level -1.
  • There are also internal links to Gordon Square 20 on levels 2 and 3.
  • On the second level this consists of two heavy single fire doors.
  • On the third level this consists of a single manual door.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout floor -1 only.
  • All other floors are accessed only be stairs.
  • There are 6 clearly marked steps with a handrail on the right going up to access the shared toilets on the stairwell landing between the ground and first floor.
  • There are internal links to Gordon Square 20 on floors 2 and 3.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth.
  • There is a resting area on level 3 with chairs without arms.
  • There is clearly written directional signage at key points on circulation routes.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

    • The shared step-free standard toilet facilities are located on floor -1.
    • The shared standard toilet facilities are located on the stairwell landing between the ground and first floor and on the stairwell landing between the first and third floors.

Parking

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located at the rear of the building.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • The ramp gradient varies between slight and steep.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with a handrail on the left going down.
  • There are 6 steps with a handrail on the right going down.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the highest step is 8cm.
  • There are bicycles attached to the handrail on the ramp which may present an obstacle to visitors
  • The ramp bypasses alternative stepped routes leading to the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 122cm.
  • There is a single manual door at this entrance.
  • The door opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 84cm.
  • The door has a low visual contrast.
  • There is a single unmarked step at the threshold of the door with a height of 7cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located on the right from the main entrance, along the corridor on the left.
  • Levels -1, G, 1, 2, 3 and 4 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 16 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 18cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were low at the time of the survey.
