Evacuation and Fire Safety Provisions

Access To
- The library is located on the second floor of the Institute of Child Health, on the right out of the reception lift.

- The most accessible route has step-free level access, a lift, manual doors and shiny flooring.
- There is written text signage on or near the entrance.
- There is step-free level access via lift into the library.
- The lift bypasses the steps.
- There are 5 steps with a handrail on the left going down.
- The handrail is easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The steps are clearly marked.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 18cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- The steps and the stairlift are after the entrance.
- There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
- The width of the opening is 96cm.
- The door has a high visual contrast.
- There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 134cm.
- There is a key card reader 125cm from the floor to enter the library.
- There are security gates with a width restriction of 88cm after the steps.
Counter (Enquiry Desk)
- The counter is located on the left after the entrance to the library.
- The distance from the library entrance is 10m.
- There is step-free level access to the counter.
- The height of the counter is 74cm.
- There is not a lowered section at the counter.
- The counter has patterned/distracting backgrounds.
- There is a clearly signed portable hearing assistance system.
- The hearing assistance system was tested, however it was not working at the time of the survey.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- The seating is as for the main library seating provision. there is not a dedicated reception seating area.
Library
- There is not step-free level access throughout the library.
- The following areas have step-free access via ramps or slopes: the lower area of the library after the Enquiry Desk.
- The following areas have stepped access: the lower area of the library after the Enquiry Desk.
- Access throughout the library may include manual doors and narrow walkways.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
- Seating available in the library includes: chairs without armrests and benches.
- Furniture available in the library includes: tables, height adjustable tables, desks and height adjustable desks.
- The surface heights are suitable for wheelchair users.
- The clear underside space of the surfaces is not suitable for wheelchair users.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
- The height of the touchscreen display ranges from 105cm to 155cm from the floor.

- This library is able to provide material in the following formats: ebook and ejournal.
