- Medical Sciences Building is a large building with 6 floors.
- There is 1 main lift and 4 staircases within the building.
- The floors are signed as -1, G, M, 1, 2 and 3.
- There is internal step-free access between the Medical Sciences Building and the Anatomy Building on the first and second floors.
- There is not a toilet with adaptations available.

Getting Inside
- The approach to the building is step-free via a steep slope from either South Quad or Malet Place.
- Medical Sciences Building has five external entrances and three internal entrances from the Anatomy Building. The accessible entrance provides step-free access to the basement. The door is single and manual.
- The accessible entrance is not signed.
- The Accessible entrance provides step-free access to the basement.
- The other entrances are as follows:
Basement
There are two single manual doors with stepped access in the tunnel between South Quad and Malet Place.
There are double manual doors with a slope in front of the entrance and direct access into the East Stairs from South Quad.
Ground Floor
There are double manual doors with stepped access from South Quad.
First Floor
Access from the Anatomy Building is level with a manual door.
Second Floor
Access from the Anatomy Building is level with a manual door.
Third Floor
Access from the Anatomy Building is stepped with a manual door.
Getting Around
- There is limited step-free access throughout the building on all floors.
- Access to Rooms 337 - 340 on the third floor is via the East Stairs.
- There is 1 step to access the standard male toilet in the basement.
There are 4 steps with a handrail on the right off the East Stairs to access the ground floor corridor.
There is 1 step without handrails to access the male and female standard toilets on the mezzanine floor.
There are 5 steps with handrails on both sides along the first floor corridor.
There are 3 steps with handrails on both sides along the second floor corridor. - Floor surfaces along the circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
- There are no resting areas along the circulation routes but there is a resting area in the ground floor lobby.
- Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
- There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

- The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located in the basement, mezzanine and on the staircase between the first and second floor.

- Standard shower facilities are located in the standard male toilet on the staircase between the first and second floor.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)
- This entrance is located in the tunnel between South Quad and Malet Place.
- The entrance area is not clearly signed.
- There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
- There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
- The slope has a steep gradient.
- There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 87cm.
- There is a single manual door at this entrance.
- The door opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 84cm.
- The door has a high visual contrast.
- There is step-free access via ramp as you enter.
- The ramp has a slight gradient.
- The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with a handrail that switches sides.
Lift
- The lift was out of service at the time of the survey (March 2025).
Stairs (Main Stairs)
- The stairs surveyed are located in the centre of the building.
- The ground, first and second floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going up.
- The handrail is not easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 16cm.
- The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
Stairs (East Stairs)
- The stairs surveyed are located on the left hand side of the building.
- The basement, ground, mezzanine, first, second and third floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 18 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going up.
- The handrail is not easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 16cm.
- The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
Stairs (Basement to Ground Floor)
- The stairs surveyed are located at the front of the building.
- There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
- The basement and ground floor can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 19 steps between floors.
- The steps are unmarked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.
Stairs (Second Floor to Third Floor)
- The stairs surveyed are located along the second floor corridor.
- There is a single manual door to access the stairwell.
- The second and third floor can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail that switches sides.
- The handrail is not easy to grip.
- The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
