Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and uneven in places.
  • There is one main entrance to the building with automatic doors.
  • In front of the entrance is a steep tactile drop kerb which serves as a steep ramp into the building.
  • The main entrance accesses the building reception on the ground floor.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the majority of the building on all floors.
  • There are two steps to access rooms 405, 406A, 406B and 406C on the fourth floor along the circulation route.
  • There are also two steps to access room 411 from this area. Room 411 can also be accessed step-free from elsewhere on the fourth floor.
  • Flooring within the UCL Institute of Global Health is carpet.
  • Flooring in the circulation area elsewhere in the building are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.

Entrance

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a steep gradient with resting areas.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with no handrails.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 145cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 122cm.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Reception

  • The reception is located to your right on entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 4m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 125cm.
  • There is not a lowered section at the desk.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located to your right on entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 10m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • The lower ground, ground, first, second, third, fourth and fifth floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The weight limit for the lift is 1600kg.
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 105cm.
