Evacuation and Fire Safety Provisions

Overview

  • About View
    • Torrington Place 1-19 is a large L-shaped building.
      The main building is alongside Torrington Place, with the West Wing to the left of the building.
      The main building has 12 floors, and the West Wing has 6 floors.
    • There are 3 main lifts and 2 main staircases within the building.
      There is a lift and staircase each for the main building and for access to the West Wing, and a third lift to the rear of the main building.
      For the purposes of this guide the lift for access to the West Wing is referred to the West Wing lift.
      The West Wing lift and stairs go on to serve the main building from the sixth to ninth floors.
    • The floors are signed as B for the basement, G for the ground floor, 1 for the first floor, 2 for the second floor, and so on.

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • There are 3 entrances into the building.
    The main entrance to the right of the building is the most accessible, and has a push pad activated, single automatic door.
    The West Wing entrance to the left of the building has push pad activated, double automatic doors (the alternative being a manual revolving door.
    The basement entrance to the rear of the building has manual double doors.
    A key card is required for access to the West Wing and rear entrances.
  • The main entrance is signed '1-19 Torrington Place'.
    The West Wing entrance is signed 'UCL Bloomsbury Campus Torrington Place'.
    The rear entrance is not named or signed.
  • The main entrance provides step-free level access via platform lift to the reception foyer on the ground floor.
  • The West Wing entrance provides step-free access via ramp to the ground floor and the West Wing lifts.
    The rear entrance provides step-free access via ramp to the basement and the main lifts.
    There is a long steep slope on the approach to the rear entrance.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout the building on all floors.
    There is step-free level access on the eighth to tenth floors of the main building, and on all floors in the West Wing.
  • There are numerous short steep ramps in circulation corridors next to the lift lobbies on the second to sixth floors of the main building.
  • There is a 14cm high step in the main access corridor on the fifth floor of the main building which may present a trip hazard.
  • There are 5 to 12 steps to access male and female standard toilets on the first to eighth floors, and also on the ground floor in the West Wing.
    There are 10 steps to access the shared standard toilet on the ninth floor.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny or patterned finish.
  • There are resting areas in lobby areas on the ground and basement floors, and in open plan areas from the sixth floor upwards, with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building up to the sixth floor.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 6 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the ground floor and basement, and on the third and eighth to tenth floors.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • The toilet with adaptations with a right-hand transfer space is located on the ground floor.
      All other toilets with adaptations have a transfer space on the left-hand side.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, and in the West Wing basement within the male standard toilets.
    • The shared step-free toilet facilities are located on the ground floor, basement and on the tenth floor opposite the West Wing lift.
    • The male and female step-free toilet facilities are located on the basement floor of the West Wing and on the fifth floor.

Lift (Main)

  • The lift surveyed is located ahead from the security barriers at reception.
  • The distance from the security barriers at reception is 16m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and doors permanently held open.
  • The basement to the tenth floors are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 75cm.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located ahead from the security barriers at reception.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • The basement to the tenth floors can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
