Access Guide

Introduction

  • James Lighthill House is divided into two buildings: the main building and the lodge. To access the lodge and the rear of the main building it is necessary to enter the main building and proceed to enter the courtyard to its rear - which is only possible via steps.
  • There is also a separate building containing security and a launderette in front of the main building's entrance.

Useful Information

Building Parking

  • The building does have its own dedicated parking.
  • Building Car Park View
    • There are no parking charges.
    • The car park is located to the left of the main entrance.
    • The car park type is open air/surface.
    • The car park does not have a height restriction barrier.
    • Designated Blue Badge parking bays are not available.
    • The route from the car park to the building is accessible to a wheelchair user with assistance.
    • Assistance may be required because there is / are dropped kerbs.
    • The dropped kerb between the car park and the building does not have tactile paving.
    • The car park surface is tarmac.

Reception

  • The reception desk/counter is medium height (77cm - 109cm).

Getting Around

  • Access View
    • There is step free access throughout the building.
    • There are doors in corridors which have to be opened manually.
  • Getting Around View
    • There is not clear signage for building facilities/areas in the foyer/reception area.
    • There is no directional signage at key points of circulation routes.
    • There is some flooring in corridors with a very shiny finish which could cause issues with glare or be perceived as slippery.
    • There is good colour contrast between the walls and floor in all areas.
    • The lighting levels are good.
    • This building does not play background music.
    • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • Comments View
    • There is no step free access to the lodge or the main building as there entrances are located off the courtyard. However within each of the building there are no areas that have to be overcome by steps.
    • The flooring in the lodge as seen in photographs 3 & 4 is very shiny making it particularly difficult to notice any wet area.
    • This may make slipping a potential hazard.

    • There are manual, heavy, single doors to access the stairwell on all floors.

    • There is a set of stairs at the end of the entrance foyer that leads between LG-G (as shown in photograph 3).

Lift (Main Building)

  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are LG-G-1-2-3-4-5.
  • Wall mounted information boards are not provided at lift landings.
