Getting To The Hospital (Derriford Hospital)

  • By Road View
    • Derriford Hospital is located on Derriford Road, Plymouth.
      The closest A road is Tavistock Road A386 which runs between Bideford and Plymouth city centre.
      If using a sat nav, use post code PL6 8DH.
    • There are a number of patient and visitor car parks at Derriford Hospital.
      There is a designated car park for Blue Badge holders only, Car Park A - a patient and visitor car park located directly opposite the hospital, and Bircham multi-storey car park which is for the use of everyone.
      All of these car parks have Blue Badge parking bays and dementia friendly parking spaces.
      There are a number of drop off points available around the main hospital entrances, as well as car parks for individual services such as Oncology, the Discharge Lounge, Rowan House and Boots Pharmacy.
      Most parking is pay on exit, however parking outside Boots Pharmacy or Rowan House is pay and display.
      There are multiple electric vehicle charging points located within the Bircham multi-storey car park.
      Blue Badge holders can park for free across the site when parked in a marked disabled bay.
      For pay on exit car parks, hold the barcode (on the photo side of your Blue Badge) under the scanner at the exit barrier machine. This will scan your Badge and let you out for free.
      Free parking is also available for patients who meet a certain criteria.
      If you qualify under any of these groups, please go to the main reception to obtain your parking permit.
      Proof of appointments must be shown and an authorisation slip obtained from the department or ward.
  • By Bus View
    • There are multiple bus services that stop at Derriford Hospital including Stagecoach Buses, Plymouth CityBus, and Go Cornwall Bus.
      Examples of the buses that stop here include: 50, 14, 27, 42, 42A, 42B, 42C, 52, 1, 1A, 28, 34, 59, 51, 71 and 14.
    • There are 6 onsite bus stops located directly outside the Level 6 Zone A Main Entrance on Hospital Road.
    • The bus stops are sheltered, have bench seating and there is a space for a wheelchair user to wait next to the seats.
    • The closest bus stop (Derriford Stand 6) is approximately 39m from the Level 6 Zone A Main Entrance.
      To get to the main hospital entrance, patients will encounter a busy zebra crossing with dropped kerbs and tactile paving and slopes which are slight to very slight.
  • By Train View
    • The closest train station is Plymouth Station which is approximately 4.4 miles from the hospital.
      The services here are provided by Great Western Railway and Cross Country Trains.
      Some of the destinations via this railway include Penzance, Glasgow Central, Gunnislake, Cardiff Central, Newquay, London Paddington, Edinburgh and Leeds.

Getting Help and Assistance (Derriford Hospital)

  • The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is located on Level 6 of the main hospital building in Zone A, to the right of the main concourse.

  • There are volunteers available for help and assistance at the hospital.
  • Volunteers can be found at all main hospital entrances.

  • There is not an assistance dog toilet or toileting area on the hospital site.
  • Water bowls for assistance dogs are available on request.
  • BSL interpreters can be provided on request.
  • Language interpreters can be provided on request.
  • A mobility scooter charging point is not available at the hospital.
  • Mobility aids are available to help patients move around and include; wheelchairs, motorised wheelchairs, mobile hoists and adjustable beds.

Getting Around (Derriford Hospital)

    • There is step free access throughout the building via lift(s).
  • Circulation View
    • There are not doors in corridors which have to be opened manually.
    • The type of flooring in walkways and corridors is vinyl.
    • There is flooring in corridors which is shiny and could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
    • Handrails are not provided in corridors.
    • Seating is provided in corridors.
    • There is high visual contrast between the walls and floor in the majority of corridors.
    • The lighting levels are varied.

    • There is not a designated place of safety which can be used by people with dementia, autism or learning disabilities.

    • This venue does not play background music in public areas.

    • There is a free shuttle bus service available for those patients and their carers that need help getting around the Derriford Hospital site.
      The shuttle bus is available 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
      The bus cannot currently transport persons in wheelchairs, but folded wheelchairs, walkers and other large items can be accommodated.
      There are small bus stops located next to the car parks and around the hospital site.
      Call the parking desk on 01752 432000 or 07827 897431 giving your location.
      The driver will collect you and drive you to wherever you need to go within the Derriford site.
      After your appointment or visit is over, call again. You will be collected and returned to your parked vehicle. Alternatively, go to the parking desk, by the main entrance, who will call the bus for you.

Lift (Zone A - Main Lift Bank)

    • There is a slight ramp with a handrail on the right going up for access to M&S Simply Food.
      Costa, Boots Pharmacy, Pizza Hut, Koi Noodles and Subway are located on a steep slope next to the multi-storey car park.
      To avoid the slope you can park in the Boots Pharmacy pay and display car park or you can call the free mobility shuttle bus and it will take you wherever you want to go.
