Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, seminar rooms, computer rooms, teaching rooms, study areas and offices.
  • Services / facilities within the grounds include a roof terrace directly ahead from the main entrance and reception on the ground floor.
  • The services/rooms per floor are: Lower Ground (LG): Computer lab, lecture theatre, teaching and seminar rooms, study area, tutorial rooms and accessible and standard toilets. Ground (G): Access Grid Room, Heilbronn Seminar Room and another seminar room, various lecture theatres, lifts (LG, 1 & 2 & GA, 1, 1A, 2, 2A), offices, Matrix Student Society, Quiet Study Room, Student Wellbeing, tutorial rooms, roof terrace, accessible and standard toilets.

Getting Here (To Fry Building)

  • By Road View
    • The Fry Building is located in the middle of the fork between Woodland Road and University Road near to Tyndall Avenue and the majority of the academic buildings. The building is accessed by the main entrance with a steep ramp/ stairs on approach to the doors or via an accessible entrance off the University Road side of the building. To the main campus: The University of Bristol campus is located in the St Michael's Hill area of Bristol, in the centre of the City.
      The campus can be reached by using the M32 from the M4 and M5.
      Exit the M4 at junction 19, signed for the M32 and follow the M32 southwest into Bristol.
      Continue onto the A4032, and continue straight on to the A4044 (Bond Street).
      At St James Barton Roundabout take the 2nd exit, onto Marlborough Street (B4051).
      Continue to follow Marlborough Street, passing Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
      Take the left hand lane and continue straight ahead at the traffic lights.
      Continue along Park Row, and turn right onto Woodland Road.
      Proceed up the hill to the crossroads.
      At the crossroads turn right onto Tyndall Avenue, at the centre of the campus.
    • Parking in building car parks is by permit only. Blue Badge holders require a permit to park in university car parks.
      On-street parking is available on the surrounding streets. On-street parking is time limited, however Blue Badge holders are not subject to any charges of time limits.
  • By Bus View
    • Cantocks Close bus stop on Woodland Road (Bus U1) or Elton Road/ Tyndall Avenue Bus Stops (Bus 72) are all within 250m of the building. To the main campus: The 9 and 72 bus services from Bristol Temple Meads train station run a combined frequency of every 15 minutes at peak times and stop at Tyndall Avenue on the University campus. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
      The number 8 service from Bristol Temple Meads train station runs at least every 10 minutes at peak times and stops by The Berkeley pub on Queen's Road opposite the Wills Memorial Building before heading towards the Richmond Building (Students' Union) and Clifton village. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
      The 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the One bus services all stop in the Park Street, Triangle, Whiteladies Road area, a couple of minutes away from the University.
      The Bristol Unibus service connects the Stoke Bishop halls of residences with the University campus and city centre.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest mainline station to the University is Bristol Temple Meads. Buses and taxis are available from the station to the campus. Bristol Temple Meads is served by CrossCountry, GWR, and South Western Railway.
      The nearest local train station is Clifton Down. There are no direct buses from the station to the campus. Clifton Down is served by GWR.

Building Parking

There are 2 clearly marked bollards on the edge of the pavement just outside the pedestrian gate to the car park which narrow the pavement to 95cm. They are 141cm apart.

    • Clearly signed and/or standard marked parking bays are available.

    • There are spaces 225cm wide that are not individually spaced on both roads on either side of the building. Both roads have a steep gradient as the building is on a hill (photographs 7-9). There is a dropped kerb in front of the accessible entrance on Woodside Road. Payment machines are on both roads or payment can be made by phone (photograph 10).

Approach to Main Entrance

  • From Woodland Road there are two ways to the main entrance - a stepped approach and a sloped approach.
  • Sloped Approach (photographs 1-3) - There is a sloped approach off Woodland Road which has a steep long gradient (17m) that avoids the steps. There are four unmarked bollards 138cm gaps in between them at the bottom of this slope. This slope has no handrails and levels out near the main entrance door.
  • Stepped Approach (photographs 4 & 5) - There are 15+ stairs of a medium height with handrails on the sides and centrally.
  • They are marked (not clearly) with the marking 3cm from the edge of the step, but do have tactile paving at the top and bottom.
  • There is a seating area outside this entrance (photograph 6).

Outside Access (Main Entrance)

    • This information is for the entrance located on the lower ground floor towards the rear of the building. There is a stepped approach via an alleyway off University Road.

    • The height of the card reader/lock is 95cm (3ft 1in).
    • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at this entrance.

    • The door(s) is / are single.
    • The width of the door opening is 105cm (3ft 5in).

    • The key card reader for the automatic door is before the door on a pillar to the right.
    • There is also a set of revolving doors that can also be used to enter.
    • The revolving door has a push button on it 85cm high on both sides which currently doesn't work. The revolving doors have to be pushed.
    • There are 12 marked steps of medium height with handrails on both sides on approach to the door (12m away). There is an alleyway from University Road that leads to these steps (photographs 4 & 5).

Reception

  • The Fry Building Reception is located just in front of the main entrance on the ground floor.

    • The higher level of the desk is 110cm and the lower level is 78cm high.

Getting Around (Lower Ground Floor)

    • There is a slight ramp, with handrails on both sides, for access to the Wolfson Lecture Theatre, central lift, accessible toilet from the study area and lower ground floor entrance doors.
    • The ramp or slope does bypass the step(s).
    • The ramp overcomes some steps from the left-hand side staircase to the lecture theatre, the 3 marked steps up to a section of the study area and the 10 steps in the lower ground floor corridor (photographs 1-3). However the entrance into the building on this level also has steps on approach. This is bypassed by using the central lift, as the left-hand side lift has stairs in the corridor between the study area and lecture theatre.
    • There is/are 10+ unmarked step(s), with handrails on both sides, for access to the lower ground floor study area (from the corridor with the left-hand side lift & stairs)..
    • The step(s) is/are medium height (11cm - 17cm).

    • The lower ground floor has various tables and chairs (study spaces) that vary from 73-75cm high. The chairs have no armrests. There are also a few sofas (photographs 8-10).
    • There are various automatic doors in the corridors (stayed permanently open at time or survey) that have push buttons 85cm to open if necessary (photographs 11 & 12).
    • On the lower ground floor the only manual doors to open are from the left hand staircase/ lift to the theatre/ central lift via a level change (level change 3).
    • There are various seminar, teaching rooms and lecture theatres (photograph 13) on this floor.
    • There are vending machines for snacks, cold & hot drinks near the theatre and central lift with controls up to 126cm high (photograph 14).

Getting Around (First and Second Floor Level Changes)

    • There is/are 6 clearly marked step(s), with a handrail on the left going up, for access to a few offices spaces on a slightly higher level on the first floor. .
    • The step(s) is/are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • There is a platform lift which overcomes the steps.
    • The platform lift has a weight limit of 280kg and the controls are 90-100cm high. The stairs and lift are shown in photographs 1-5. At the top of the stairs/ lift there is an automatic door with a key card reader to the left to open that is 95cm high. The key card reader has further platform lift controls (photograph 6). Within this office space area this is a few tables and chairs as well as the offices (photograph 7).
    • There is/are 2 clearly marked step(s), with handrails on both sides, for access to offices 1.84-1.87 on the first floor..
    • The step(s) is/are medium height (11cm - 17cm).
    • The steps and office area accessed are show in photographs 8 and 9.
