Introduction

  • Services / facilities within the building include accommodation (a few with ensuite allocated based on medical need) with shared kitchens and bathrooms. L Block, the most accessible block due to its automatic doors, has an accessible room with wheel-in shower as well as standard rooms with ensuite.
  • Services / facilities within the grounds include a common room (meeting/study area) with accessible and standard toilets, a laundrette, tennis courts and gardens. There are slight and steep slopes or steps to navigate around the area between accommodation blocks. The slight and steep ramp/slopes can be used to avoid the steps to access the laundrette and the accommodation blocks on the lower side of the site.
  • There are various blocks of accommodation with some similar and different access: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, J, L.
  • There is no reception point within Goldney Hall residences. The reception point serving this residence is Clifton Hill House. For recorded or non-recorded mail use the Student Support Centre address: Your name, West Residential Village Student Support Centre, Clifton Hill House, Lower Clifton Hill, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1BX. There are pigeon holes/ a post room for your residence which you will need your university card to access.

Getting Here

  • By Road View
    • From the city centre follow the A4 towards Avonmouth.
      Having passed the Cathedral on your right and the at Bristol Science Centre on the left, you reach a signal controlled roundabout.
      Take the second exit to Jacobs Wells Road and then the first turning on the left (200m) Constitution Hill.
      The Lower Clifton residences are located at the top of Constitution Hill.
    • There are a limited number of spaces at the residences.
      The Residential Halls have a parking permit system in place.
      Student Permits are free for Blue Badge holders (or where permission has been granted).
      All other parking is on the roadside and is mostly Residents Parking Zones with limited pay and display parking.
      On-street parking charges and restrictions do not apply to Blue Badge Holders.
  • By Bus View
    • The nearest bus route from the city centre is the number 8 to Victoria Square.
      From the bus stop walk down Clifton Road to Lower Clifton Hill (approximately 500m).
      An alternative is routes 1, 2, 3, 3X, 4, 8, 9 or 16 (the University Bus) to Triangle West.
      The walking route from the bus stop is down Berkeley Place to Lower Clifton Hill. The gradients in this area are steep and not suitable for people with mobility difficulties.
  • By Train View
    • The nearest main line station is Bristol Temple Meads. The number 8 bus stops at the main entrance to the station.

Building Parking

  • The building does have its own dedicated parking.
  • Building Car Park View
    • The car park can be used by visitors, Blue Badge holders, staff permit holders and student permit holders.
    • Parking charges apply for all except permit and Blue Badge holders.
    • The car park is located in front of the main entrance gates into the accommodation court.
    • The car park type is open air/surface.
    • The car park does not have a height restriction barrier.
    • Designated Blue Badge parking bays are available.
    • There is/are 2 designated parking bay(s) within the car park.
    • The Blue Badge bay(s) is/are clearly marked and signposted.
    • The dimensions of the designated parking bay(s) are 280cm x 472cm (9ft 2in x 15ft 6in).

Parking in Goldney Hall for visitors and non-permit holders is paid by phone and varies from £1.75 for 2 hours and £10 for 24 hours (photograph 3). The Blue Badge bays have steep slopes and both have a 3cm lip up onto the brick paving in front of the entrance gates (photographs 4-6). Blue Badge holders must also have a valid Bristol University permit to get free parking. There is a slightly raised pedestrian brick paved path towards the main gate from the car park entrance (3cm high).

    • Clearly signed and/or standard marked parking bays are available.
    • The on street standard parking bay(s) is/are located on Goldney Avenue.
    • There are standard parking bays are on Goldney Avenue just outside the parking for the halls. The bays are 180cm wide and are not split into individual spaces (photographs 7 & 8). There is a payment machine on the pavement which has no dropped kerbs to the bays. The controls vary from 90-100cm and charges apply 9am-7pm Monday to Saturday. Payment can also be made via phone.

    • Students can apply for an annual student permit via PermitSmarti and completing the annual student permit form. These are valid from September to July and Blue Badge holders do not need to pay once successful.

Outside Access (Common Room - General Meeting/Study Area)

Getting Around Goldney Hall Residences

  • Goldney Hall has a mixture of slight and steep slopes, and steps in between blocks.
  • Photographs 1-2 show the path from the main gate and the steep slope from the garden to the side of the residence.
  • Photographs 3-5 show the slopes/ramps that can be used to navigate around to other accommodation blocks and the laundrette whilst avoiding steps.
  • Photographs 6-7 show the slope down to the flight of stairs that would otherwise have to be used to get to the laundrette if not using the longer sloped approach.

Getting Around (L Block - Accessible Block)

    • There is level access to the meeting / study seating areas on the ground floor of the area (photographs 1-3). There are further tables and separate study rooms on the floor above only accessible by a manual, heavy doors and stairs (photographs 4-6).
    • On the ground floor there is a piano, various tables that are 73cm high, a few benches 48cm high and coffee table 38cm high.
    • On the first floor there are various separated desks 72cm high with chairs with armrests and further bench/ armchair seating. There is a keyboard within the room first entered on the first floor.
    • There is a manual, heavy door 87cm wide into further seating area with booths (48cm high benches).

    • The steps have a handrail on both sides.

    • The steps are marked only on the tread where the black strip is 3cm from the edge of the step.

    • The other blocks A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K and J all have stairs to access the different floors without lifts.
    • The other blocks mostly consist of a ground floor with 3 levels each with accommodation with shared kitchen and bathrooms reached by stairs.

Other Floors (General Meeting/Study Area)

    • The floors which are accessible by stairs are the ground and first floor of the general meeting/study area.
    • The stairs are located to the left hand side of the room.
    • The stairs are approximately 10m from the General Meeting/Study area entrance.

    • There are manual, single doors which may be difficult to open to access the stairwell on the ground floor and on the first floor.

    • The standard rooms in L Block also have a counter and sink space within the ensuite rooms. They have a stepped entrance into the bathroom (photographs 10-15).
    • There is a shared kitchen on the ground floor of L Block with an automatic door. The push-button is open is 93cm high to enter and exit (photographs 16-20).
    • The shared kitchen does not have any lowered surfaces but there are lower cupboards. The counters are 92cm high and there is a dining table that is 72cm high. There is stepped access directly outside from the kitchen/dining area.
    • The other blocks A, B, C, D, E, F, G, K, J have shared kitchens and bathrooms (baths and showers) on each floor with no ensuite rooms. An example of the shared kitchens is shown in photographs 22 and 23. Photograph 21 shows the steps into the kitchen on the first two floors in Block A.

  • The laundrette is located on the lower level of the site near to accommodation block A. It can be reached by slopes/ramps.
  • Before the door there is a ramp with a slight gradient that is 116cm wide with a rail round the right hand side (photograph 1 & 2).
  • The doors are manual, double with one door locked and a width of 67cm. The door has a slight lip (photograph 3) and key card reader on handle 113cm high.
  • There are 4 washers and 4 dryers (on top of washing machines) with controls 114cm high for both (photographs 4 & 5). A wash station laundry card is used for payment.
  • There are a few trip hazards due to mats and vents within the area (photograph 6). The light switches are 135cm high.

Gardens & Outdoor Area

  • Within the accommodation area there is a picnic table and green areas for students to relax and enjoy (photographs 1 & 2).
  • There is also access from the residences to the Goldney Hall gardens via steps (shown in photograph 3) or via slopes from the grassy areas within the accommodation area. Photographs 4-7 show the gardens and further steps within this area.
  • There are two tennis courts which do not need to be pre-booked.
