Access Guide
Access To
- The Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD) is located on floors 04 and 05 on the North side of the Richmond Building, to the right after you exit the North lift.

- The most accessible route has step-free level access and a lift.
- There is written text signage on or near the entrance.
- There is step-free level access into the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD).
- There are double manual doors which open towards you.
- One of the doors was locked at the time of the survey.
- The locked door can be opened on request.
- The doors are easy to open.
- The width of the opening is 92cm.
- The doors have a high visual contrast.
- There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 105cm.
- There is a keycard reader to gain access, which has a height of 106cm.
- There is also an intercom which has a heigh of 101cm.
Getting Around
- There is step-free access throughout the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD)on both floors.
- The floors within this centre are signed as 4th floor and 5th floor, which correspond to floor 04 and 05 within the rest of the Richmond Building.
- The are internal stairs within the centre between the 4th and 5th floors.
- The Richmond Building North side lift can be used to access both floors, bypassing the stairs.
- Floor surfaces throughout the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD) are carpeted.
- There are resting areas in all circulation areas with a mixture of seating.
- Wall mounted floor plans are available.
- There are no manual doors in circulation areas.
Reception
- The reception is located to the left after you enter the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD).
- The distance from the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD) entrance is 6m.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 112cm.
- There is a lowered section at the desk.
- The height of the lowered section is 77cm.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
- Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
- There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- Seating available in this area includes: sofas.
- Furniture available in this area includes: coffee tables.
- The chairs are fixed.
Stairs
- The stairs surveyed are located in the centre of the Centre for Academic Language and Development (CALD).
- The 4th and 5the floors can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20+ steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 18cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade and unshaded light sources.
