Access To
- The Biffen Lecture Theatre is located on the basement floor of the Department of Genetics Building.
The lecture theatre is not accessed internally, but through an external entrance only. - The external entrance to the lecture theatre is located at the north-east corner of the Genetics Building, to the left of the main entrance to the building.
On the route to the lecture theatre, there are uneven surfaces and a steep ramp leading down to the entrance. - View information on Department of Genetics Building (opens new tab) .
- There is written text signage on or near the entrance.
- There is step-free access via ramp into the lecture theatre.
- The ramp gradient varies between slight and steep.
- The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
- There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
- The door has a locked extension leaf.
- The width of the opening is 84cm.
- The door has a low visual contrast.
Teaching
- This is a lecture theatre.
- There is step-free level access to the speaker’s area and front row only.
- The following areas have stepped access: all seating behind the first row.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- Some flooring is shiny.
- Floor coverings are not even and could potentially cause a trip hazard.
- The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
- Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.
- Lighting levels are adjustable.
- There is tiered seating with no handrails at the steps.
- There are designated spaces for wheelchair users.
- The designated spaces for wheelchair users are located in the front row of the seating.
- There is step-free level access to the designated space surveyed.
- Companions sit next to you.
- There is not space for an assistance dog to rest.
- Seating available in the room includes: chairs without armrests and lecture chairs.
- Furniture available in the room includes: tables, desks and height adjustable desks.
- Some chairs and tables are fixed.
- The surface heights are suitable for wheelchair users.
