Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free with some uneven surfaces.
  • There are 5 entrances into the building providing step-free level access to levels 2, 3 and 4, and ramped access to Level 1.
    All entrances have key card released manual doors.
  • The most accessible (main) entrance is signed KAVLI INSTITUTE FOR COSMOLOGY.
  • The main entrance provides step-free level access to Level 2.
  • There is a side entrance to the left of the building under the link bridge with Battcock building which also provides step-free level access to Level 2.
    There is a side entrance with stepped access en route to the right side of the building under the link bridge with Hoyle building which provides ramped access to Level 1.
    There is an internal link bridge with the Hoyle building providing step-free level access to Level 3.
    There is an internal link bridge with the Battcock building providing step-free level access to level 4.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout the building on all levels.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are carpet tiles.
  • There are numerous resting areas on levels 1, 2, and 3.
  • There is no wayfinding signage within the building.
  • There are not manual doors in any circulation corridors, only to access stairwells.

    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within the toilet with adaptations on Level 2.

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located to the right of the building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 110cm.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 130cm.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 98cm.
  • There is a second set of double manual doors .
  • The second set of doors open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 174cm.
  • The second set of doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Lift

  • The lift surveyed is located straight ahead after the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 5m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access.
  • Levels 1 through 4 are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a medium visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings and a medium visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
