Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free and level.
  • The only step-free access to the building is via the Whipple Museum. Access will need to be organised ahead of time with the building staff and there is only step-free access to the seminar room. There is only step-free level access to level 1 and the seminar room on the basement level via the Whipple Museum.

Entrance

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 2 steps with no handrails.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 15cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • There is an intercom at a height of 106cm.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 61cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a medium visual contrast.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Reception

  • The reception is located on level 1, to the left as you enter via the main entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 1m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 104cm.
  • There is not a lowered section at the desk.
  • The reception has patterned/distracting backgrounds and windows.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
  • Some flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
  • The reception was temporarily closed at the time of survey, however staff will provide assistance if you press the intercom at the main entrance.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located at the centre of the building.
  • The basement, ground, first, second and third floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 11 steps between floors.
  • The steps have some clear markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
