Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the accessible entrance is step-free, via slight ramps/slopes.
  • There is step-free level access to the main entrance on Free School Lane, however, there is stepped access at this entrance itself.
  • The Department of Social Anthropology has three entrances. The main entrance on Free School Lane provides stepped access to the ground floor. The accessible entrance to the rear of the building provides step-free level access to the ground floor. The Basement entrance to the rear of the building provides step-free level access to the top of the stairs leading down to the Basement only. Both of these latter entrances have slight ramped/sloped access on their approach.
    All three entrances have single, manual doors (with one leaf locked). The Basement entrance also has a keypad.
  • The main entrance on Free School Lane is signed as "University of Cambridge Department of Social Anthropology Main Entrance".
    The accessible entrance is signed as "Department of Social Anthropology".
    The basement entrance is signed as "Department of Social Anthropology Basement".
  • The accessible entrance provides step-free level access to the ground floor of the building, including the Reception.
  • The main entrance on Free School Lane has stepped access.
    The Basement entrance is located to the rear of the building, next to the accessible entrance, and has step-free level access to the top of the stairs leading down to the Basement only. There is no internal access to the rest of the building from this entrance or the Basement.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access through each floor of the building, but access to the Basement, first floor and second floor is via stairs only.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes consist of low pile carpet, except for some shiny concrete flooring on the steps after the main entrance on Free School Lane, and some shiny wooden flooring on the main stairs from the first floor to the second floor.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Overhead and wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided in some areas of the building.
  • There are some manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building, but all are permanently held open.

Entrance (Main Entrance - Free School Lane)

  • This entrance is located at the front of the building, off Free School Lane.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 62cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a medium visual contrast.
  • There is a second set of double manual doors .
  • The second set of doors are permanently held open.
  • The width of the opening is 114cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The second set of doors have a medium visual contrast.
  • There is stepped access as you enter.
  • There are 4 steps with a handrail on the left going down.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail does not cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The steps are unmarked.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 14cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • This entrance is located to the rear of the building, opposite the main entrance to the Phoenix Building.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces and bollards.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 100cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door has a locked extension leaf.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • There is a push pad at a height of 80cm.
  • The width of the opening is 86cm.
  • The door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 105cm.

Reception

  • The reception is located to the left and then diagonally to the right as you enter through the accessible entrance.
  • The distance from the main entrance is 9m.
  • The most accessible route to reception has narrow walkways and narrow openings.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The walkway in front of the Reception desk is 84cm wide. There is no turning space in front of the desk.
  • The height of the reception desk is 100cm.
  • There is not a lowered section at the desk.
  • The reception has windows, glazed screens and patterned/distracting backgrounds.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: chairs without armrests, sofas and benches.
  • Furniture available in this area includes: tables and coffee tables.
  • The seating area is in the corridor leading from the accessible entrance to the Reception desk, to the left as you enter through the accessible entrance.

Stairs (Main Stairs - Ground Floor to First Floor)

  • The stairs surveyed are located to the left and left again as you enter through the accessible entrance.
  • The ground floor and first floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have a handrail on the right going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • Lighting levels are adjustable.

Stairs (Main Stairs - First Floor to Second Floor)

  • The stairs surveyed are located in the centre of the building, to the left and left again at the top of the main stairs - ground floor to first floor.
  • The first floor and second floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have faded markings and have a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail is easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail extends horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • The steps have open risers.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.
  • Lighting levels are adjustable.

Entrance (Basement)

  • This entrance is located to the rear of the building, adjacent to the accessible entrance.
  • The approach to the entrance has uneven surfaces and bollards.
  • The entrance area is clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a key pad at a height of 148cm.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance, however one door is locked.
  • The doors open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 53cm.
  • The doors have a high visual contrast.
  • There is a high door handle to exit at a height of 137cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.
  • This entrance provides access to the top of the stairs down to the Basement only. There is no internal access to the rest of the building from here.

Stairs (To Basement)

  • The stairs surveyed are located straight ahead as you enter through the Basement entrance.
  • The Basement and Basement entrance (ground floor) can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 14 steps between floors.
  • The steps are clearly marked and have a handrail on the left going down.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
