Overview

Getting Inside

  • The Department of Zoology (David Attenborough Building) occupies a small area of the First, Second and Third Floors of the David Attenborough Building, above the University Museum of Zoology. As such, it has no external entrances.
    There is internal step-free access between the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building) and the Department of Zoology (David Attenborough Building) via a slightly-ramped link bridge on the second and third floors. There is internal step-free level access between the University Museum of Zoology and the Department of Zoology (David Attenborough Building) via the Lift (by Link Bridge).
    There is internal step-free level access between the David Attenborough Building - Cambridge Conservation Initiative and the Department of Zoology (David Attenborough Building) through an office on the second and third floors.
    As this is a part of the Department of Zoology, visitors and contractors should first sign in at the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building) Reception in the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building). As such, the route through this building over the Link Bridge is the usual route to access this venue.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors, and between all floors via lift.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes are comprised of shiny vinyl flooring and low-pile carpet.
  • There are resting areas in some circulation and lobby areas with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors in some circulation corridors, but all are permanently held open.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

    • There are 3 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located at the far end of the main corridor leading from the lift on the first floor, second floor and third floor.
    • All toilets with adaptations have a left hand transfer space.
    • The male toilet facilities are located at the far end of the main corridor leading from the lift on the first floor and third floor.
    • The female toilet facilities are located at the far end of the main corridor leading from the lift on the second floor.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • All standard toilets contain a cubicle with a door that opens outwards, but which does not have any additional ambulant features.

Lift (by Link Bridge)

  • The lift surveyed is located at the end of the link bridge, opposite the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building).
  • The distance from the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building) is 14m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has a slight ramp or slope.
  • Floors lower ground, ground, P, 1, 2 and 3 (lower ground, ground, and P are in the University Museum of Zoology and are not part of this Department) are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a medium visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 90cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 110cm (width) x 150cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a medium visual contrast.
  • All of the internal lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Internally the lift has: a separate door to exit, a hearing assistance alarm system, a visual floor indicator, an audible announcer and a list of floor services/facilities.
  • Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey, with unshaded light sources.

Stairs (by Link Bridge)

  • The stairs surveyed are located at the end of the link bridge, opposite the Department of Zoology (Zoology Building).
  • Floors 1, 2 and 3 can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 14 steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is not between 15cm and 18cm.

Toilet with Adaptations (First Floor, Second Floor and Third Floor - Far End of Corridor - Left Hand Transfer)

    • The door opens outwards and has a high visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 85cm.
