Access Guide
Access To
- The library is located to the centre of the building on the ground and first floors.

- The most accessible route has step-free level access, manual doors and shiny flooring.
- There is written text signage on or near the entrance.
- There is step-free level access into the library.
- There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 100cm.
- The door has a low visual contrast.
- There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 115cm.
- The push button is used to release the manually operated door.
- This entrance provides access to the ground floor of the library only.
There is a similar entrance to the library on the first floor, which provides access to the first floor of the library only.
The first floor may be accessed via the main building lift.
Reception
- The reception is located on the ground floor, on the right after the entrance to the library.
- The distance from the ground floor entrance to the library is 4m.
- The most accessible route to reception has narrow walkways.
- There is step-free level access to reception.
- The height of the reception desk is 73cm.
- The reception has patterned/distracting backgrounds.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
- Lighting levels were even at the time of the survey.

Library
- There is not step-free level access throughout the library.
- The following areas have stepped access: the first floor.
Step-free access to the first floor is via the main building lift. - Access throughout the library may include narrow walkways.
- There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
- There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
- The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
- Seating available in the library includes: chairs with armrests, armchairs and sofas.
- Furniture available in the library includes: tables, high tables and desks.
- Some chairs and tables are fixed.
- Some surface heights are suitable for wheelchair users.
- The clear underside space of some surfaces is suitable for wheelchair users.
- Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.
- There is not a hearing assistance system.
- The touchscreen has the following accessibility aids: large text.
- The touch screen is not within easy reach for a seated user.
- Auxiliary aids available in this library include: document holders and handheld magnifiers.
- Material in Braille, large print, ebooks, and ejournals are available via the Libraries Accessibility Service.

Stairs
- The stairs surveyed are located to the rear of the library.
- The ground floor and the first floor of the library can be accessed by these stairs.
- There are 20 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
- The handrails are not easy to grip.
- The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
- The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
- The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
- The height of the highest step is 17cm.
- The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
- Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
- The stairs can be overcome by using the main building lift.
