Access To

Library

  • There is not step-free level access throughout the library.
  • The following areas have stepped access: the library gallery area on the third floor of the Marshall Library side of the building.
  • Access throughout the library may include narrow walkways and narrow openings.
  • There is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • The walls and floor have a high visual contrast.
  • Seating available in the library includes: chairs with armrests, chairs without armrests, armchairs and high stools.
  • Furniture available in the library includes: tables and high tables.

  • The lower and upper floors of the lower level of the library are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 80cm (width) x 126cm (depth).

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located within the upper level of the library.
  • The upper level of the library and the upper level gallery can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 17 steps between floors.

  • The handrails are not easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails do not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 16cm.
  • The depth of the steps is not between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the size of the space.
  • There are 2 staircases each with 3 flights.
    The first 2 flights of each staircase have handrails which switch sides.
    The third flight of each staircase has handrails on both sides.
    There is also a spiral staircase at the far end of the library to access the upper level gallery.
