Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free with level access.
  • The step-free approach to the building is from the front.
  • School of Clinical Medicine (Deakin Centre/BU40) has two entrance. The main entrance at the front has level access with two single automatic doors.
    The side entrance has sloped access.
  • The entrances are both signed as The Deakin Centre.
  • The front entrance provides step-free level access to the reception on the ground floor and the lift.
  • The side entrance is located on Richard Howe Way and has sloped access.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There is only a resting area on the ground floor circulation route and beside the second floor reception.
    All other floors do not have resting areas in the circulation routes.
  • There is some wayfinding signage provide within the building, but services signage is provided on each floor of the stairs or lift lobbies.
  • There are no manual doors in any circulation corridors, only to access stairwells, the lift or certain toilets.

Reception (Second Floor - Clinical Skills Unit Reception)

  • The reception is located in front as you exit the main lift lobby on the second floor.
  • The distance from main lift is 7m.
  • The most accessible route to reception has manual doors.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 110cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 86cm.
  • The reception has a television which may affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise in this area.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.
  • There is some room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre in the seating area (150cm x 150cm).
  • There is not space for an assistance dog to rest in the seating area.
  • Seating available in this area includes: chairs with armrests, chairs without armrests and sofas.
  • Furniture available in this area includes: tables.

Lift (Main Lift)

  • The lift surveyed is located at the rear and on the left side of the main corridor.
  • The distance from the Deakin Centre front entrance is 25m.
  • The most accessible route to the lift has step-free level access and manual doors.
  • Floors ground, one, two, and three are accessed by this lift.
  • The lift door has a high visual contrast.
  • The lift has a level manoeuvring space in front of it for a wheelchair user (150cm x 150cm).
  • The external lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.
  • All of the external lift controls are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift door opening width is 89cm.
  • The internal dimensions of the lift are 136cm (width) x 157cm (depth).
  • The internal lift control buttons have tactile markings, Braille markings and a high visual contrast.

  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.
  • The height of the steps is between 15cm and 18cm.
  • The height of the highest step is 17cm.
  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
  • Lighting levels were uneven at the time of the survey, with pools of light and shade.

Stairs (Rear Staircase)

  • The stairs surveyed are located at the rear and on the left side of the main corridor.
  • G, 1, 2, 3 can be accessed by these stairs.

Toilet with Adaptations (Second Floor - Right Hand Transfer)

    • The most accessible route to the toilet has step-free level access, a lift and manual doors.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens by sliding and has a high visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 87cm.
    • The door has a lever twist lock.
    • Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
    • There is not a grab rail on the internal door .
  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 147cm (width) x 232cm (depth) and there is not room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is a lateral transfer space to the right as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
