Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building is step-free via a slight ramp.
  • The Nanoscience Centre has two entrances. Both entrances provide step-free access via slight slopes to the ground floor.
    There are key-card activated, double automatic doors available at both entrances.
  • The entrances are not signed.
  • The accessible entrance provides step-free access via a ramp to the foyer on the ground floor.
  • The main entrance is located on the North side of the building and has step-free access via a slight slope and uneven surfaces.
    The accessible entrance is located on the South side of the building and has step-free access via a ramp.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors.
  • There is a slight slope in the main corridor through the middle of the building.
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with some having a shiny finish.
  • There are some seating areas in circulation routes including sofas in the common room just off the main corridor.
  • Wayfinding signage is very limited in this building.
  • There are manual doors to access some lobbies and corridors.

    • There is 1 toilet with adaptations.
    • The toilet with adaptations is located at the end of the main corridor on the right.
    • The toilet with adaptations has a left hand transfer space.
    • The male and female toilet facilities are located at the end of the main corridor on the right.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located at the end of the main corridor on the right.
    • The standard shower facilities were locked at the time of the survey (14/08/24).

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • This entrance is located on the South side of the building.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a slight gradient.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide with handrails on both sides.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 111cm.
  • There are double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The doors open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 74cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The doors have a low visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 115cm.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Toilet with Adaptations (Ground Floor - Left Hand Transfer)

  • Location and Access View
    • The toilet surveyed is located at the end of the main corridor on the right.
    • The distance from the accessible entrance is 18m.
    • The most accessible route to the toilet has a slight ramp or slope and manual doors.
    • There is step-free access via slope into the facility.
    • The slope has a slight gradient.
    • The ramp is over 150cm wide with no handrails.
    • There is tactile and pictorial signage on or near the door.
    • The door opens outwards and has a low visual contrast.
    • The width of the door opening is 85cm.
    • The door has a twist lock.
    • Internally the door has a high visual contrast.
    • There is not a grab rail on the internal door .
  • Dimensions and Features View
    • The dimensions of the cubicle are 206cm (width) x 195cm (depth) and there is room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm).
    • There is a lateral transfer space to the left as you face the toilet, however it is obstructed.
    • The lateral transfer space is 142cm (from the side of the toilet pan).
    • There is a lever flush on the non-transfer side.
    • There is a horizontal grab rail on the non-transfer side.
    • The horizontal grab rail has a low visual contrast.
    • There is a vertical grab rail on the transfer side.

    • This toilet with adaptations is also used as the standard female toilets.
