Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building from the car park is step-free via very easy slopes.
  • There is step-free access (via slight slopes) on the approach to the main entrance to the building on King William Walk, due to King William Walk having a slight gradient.
  • Cooper Powerhouse had two entrances.
    The accessible entrance provides step-free level access to the rear of the building on the ground floor via a single push-pad activated automatic door.
  • The accessible entrance is unsigned.
    The main entrance is signed as 'Cooper Building - Powerhouse'.
  • The main entrance is located at the front of the building on King William Walk, and has stepped access, via three steps and two sets of double manual doors.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors but stepped only access to the first floor via stairs (the building has no lift).
  • Floor surfaces along all circulation routes are hard and smooth, with shiny vinyl flooring and patterned parquet flooring in places.
  • There is a small resting area in the atrium on the ground floor, with a table and chair without armrests.
  • Wayfinding signage is not provided in the building, but each room is signed with numbered signage next to the door (plus written text signage in some cases).
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.
  • The first floor contains academic staff offices only. All teaching rooms are located on the ground floor.

    • There is 1 toilet with adaptations.
    • The toilet with adaptations is located straight ahead along the corridor, to the right and then straight ahead across the atrium as you enter the building via the accessible entrance.
    • The toilet with adaptations has a right hand transfer space.
    • The gender inclusive step-free toilet facilities are located straight ahead along the corridor, to the right and then straight ahead across the atrium as you enter the building through the accessible entrance.
    • The female step-free toilet facilities are located straight ahead along the corridor, to the right and then straight ahead across the atrium as you enter the building through the accessible entrance.
    • The male step-free toilet facilities are located straight ahead along the corridor, to the right and straight ahead across the atrium, and then to the right again as you enter the building through the accessible entrance.

Parking

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located to the rear of the building, off King William Walk.
    • The car park is open air/surface.
  • Charges and Restrictions View
    • View information on parking policies/charges (opens new tab).
    • The campus car park behind the building, immediately outside the accessible entrance, was being used as a construction site compound and was therefore closed when the building was surveyed (September 2025). The nearest campus car park while the works are ongoing is the East Gate Car Park, located off Park Row at the eastern boundary of the Old Royal Naval College.
  • Drop-off Point View
    • There is not a designated drop-off point available.
  • On-street Parking View
    • On-street designated Blue Badge parking and standard parking is available .
    • The on-street designated Blue Badge parking bays are located Stockwell Street.
    • The Blue Badge bays are clearly marked and signposted.
    • Standard on street parking is available in marked strips immediately outside the building, on King William Walk.
  • Public Car Parks View
    • There is a public car park located off Burney Street.
    • The name of the car park is Burney Street Car Park.

Entrance (Accessible Entrance)

  • This entrance is located to the rear of the building, leading in from the car park.
  • The approach to the entrance has a bollard.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is not a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via a very easy ramp at the entrance.
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 102cm.
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 92cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the opening.
  • The door has a high visual contrast.
  • There is a push pad or push button to exit at a height of 101cm.
  • Tapping the key card reader or exit push button activates the automatic door.
  • There is step-free level access as you enter.

Stairs

  • The stairs surveyed are located straight ahead along the corridor, to the right, and then on the right hand side of the atrium as you enter the building via the accessible entrance; or straight ahead as you enter the building via the main entrance.
  • There are double manual doors to access the stairwell.
  • The ground floor and first floor can be accessed by these stairs.
  • There are 20+ steps between floors.
  • The steps have low visual contrast markings and have a handrail on the right going up.
  • The handrail is not easy to grip.
  • The handrail covers the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrail does not extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.

    • The door opens outwards and has a medium visual contrast.

    • There is not a grab rail on the internal door .
