Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building varies depending on the direction of travel.
  • There is step-free access, via very easy slopes, on the approaches to the building from College Way and King William Walk.
    There is step-free access, via steep slopes, on the approaches to the building from Romney Road and the Romney Road Gate inside the Old Royal Naval College.
  • The Dreadnought Building has two entrances - the front entrance located off College Way and the rear entrance located off Romney Road.
    Both entrances provide step-free access (via a steep ramp which bypasses any steps) to the ground floor.
    There are two sets of double automatic doors at both entrances.
  • The entrances are not differentiated by name for this building.
  • The front entrance - College Way provides step-free access to the main atrium on the ground floor.
  • The rear entrance - Romney Road is located to the rear of the building, facing Romney Road. It also provides step-free access (via a steep ramp which bypasses the steps) to the main atrium on the ground floor.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free access throughout the building on all floors, via ramps.
  • On the basement floor, there are three steps in the centre of the building, located next to the east lift, and between the east and west lifts.
    They can be bypassed by accessing the wing of the basement floor you wish to access via the appropriate lift (east lift or west lift).
    On the ground floor, there is a slight ramp with no handrails to access the standard female toilets and toilet with adaptations (right hand transfer) in the east wing of the building.
  • On the first floor, there is a slight ramp with no handrails leading from the main atrium into the west wing of the building.
    This has a width of 75cm. It leads to the standard female toilets and toilet with adaptations (left hand transfer), as well as psychology labs D125-D138, open plan staff office (D150), and the FEHHS faculty office (D145).
  • On the second floor, there is a steep ramp with no handrails leading from the main atrium into the west wing of the building.
    This has a width of 76cm. It leads to the standard male toilets and toilet with adaptations (left hand transfer), as well as rooms D231-D236 and D245.
    From here there is then a further slight ramp with no handrails to access rooms D223-D226, D228 and D230. There is also a further short but steep ramp to access room D250 (open access IT lab), through which are located rooms D201, D261, D262, and a set of standard female toilets.
    On the second floor, there is also a steep ramp with no handrails leading from the main atrium into the east wing of the building. This has a width of 76cm. It leads to a set of standard female toilets and a toilet with adaptations (right hand transfer), plus rooms D204, D205, D208, D211, D215 East (Trading Room) and D215 West (Digital Marketing Suite). From here there is then an additional slight ramp, with no handrails, to access rooms D218 and D222.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes throughout the building consist of shiny wooden flooring, shiny vinyl flooring, low pile carpet, and uneven stone flooring (on the basement floor only).
  • There are resting areas in circulation and lobby areas throughout the building, with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is provided throughout the building.
  • There are manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building.

Toilet and Changing Facilities

  • Toilet Facilities View
    • There are 7 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located on the basement floor, to the left as you exit the west lift; and on the ground, first and second floors, in both the east and west wings of the building.
    • The transfer space varies between left and right in the toilets with adaptations.
    • Ambulant toilet facilities are located within all standard toilets inside the building.
    • The male step-free toilet facilities are located on the basement floor, to the left as you exit the east lift; on the ground floor, in the west wing of the building; on the first floor, in the east wing of the building; and on the second floor, in the west wing of the building.
    • The female step-free toilet facilities are located on the basement floor, to the left and left again as you exit the east lift; on the ground floor, in the east and west wings of the building; on the first floor, in the west wing of the building; and on the second floor, in the east wing of the building, and through D250 (open access IT lab), in the west wing of the building.
    • The gender inclusive step-free toilet facilities are located on the basement floor, to the left as you exit the west lift.
  • Changing Places and Changing Facilities View
    • Standard changing facilities are located on the basement floor, to the left and left again as you exit the east lift.
    • Parent and baby changing facilities are located within both the toilets with adaptations on the ground floor, and within the gender inclusive toilets in the basement floor.
  • Washroom and Shower Facilities View
    • Standard shower facilities are located on the basement floor, to the left and left again as you exit the east lift.

Parking (Campus Car Park - East Gate Car Park)

  • Car Park View
    • The car park is located to the east of the Old Royal Naval College, between Queen Anne Court, Queen Mary Court and Park Row.

    • Students or staff with disabilities not covered by a Blue Badge should contact the Student Wellbeing Service or Occupational Health respectively.
    • If you have a Disabled permit, you may also park at the Dreadnought Building in the bays reserved for disabled drivers.
    • These are accessed through the gates off King William Walk (between the public bus stops).
    • Inside the entrance you will need to call the Security telephone number on the sign to access and exit the parking area.
  • Drop-off Point View

    • The designated drop-off point is located straight ahead as you enter the car park, at the corner of Queen Mary Court.

Entrance (Front Entrance - College Way)

  • This entrance is located to the front of the building, off College Way, opposite The Mews.
  • The entrance area is not clearly signed.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a steep gradient.
