Overview

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the building varies depending on the direction of travel.
  • There is step-free access (via very easy slopes) on the approaches to the building from Greenwich High Road and the footpath leading from King William Walk.
  • There is step-free access (via slight slopes) on the approach to the building from the south east, along Stockwell Street. This is the route from the on-street Blue Badge bays and Burney Street Public Car Park.
  • Stockwell Street Building 10 has one entrance, which provides step-free level access to floor 0. There are two sets of double automatic doors at this entrance.
  • The entrance is signed as "10 Stockwell Street - University of Greenwich".
  • The entrance provides step-free level access to floor 0, via two sets of double automatic doors.

Getting Around

  • There is step-free level access throughout the building on all floors, and to all other floors, via lift.
  • Floor surfaces along circulation routes consist of shiny vinyl flooring and low pile carpet.
  • There are resting areas throughout the building with a mixture of seating.
  • Wall-mounted wayfinding signage is not provided in the building, but the facilities on each floor are signed in lift lobbies and near the stairs, and all bookshelves are numbered and signed with written text.
  • There are not manual doors along circulation routes throughout the building; however, there are manual doors to access some of the study rooms and booths off of the main library.
  • There are library card activated automatic security barriers to enter the library within the building, and push-pad activated automatic doors to enter and exit the lift lobbies on all floors.
  • Some of the study pods within the library are accessed via a single step.

    • There are 4 toilets with adaptations.
    • Toilets with adaptations are located to the rear right of the library on floors -1, 0, 1 and 2.

    • The nearest campus car park is located behind Cooper Powerhouse, off King William Walk. However, it was being used as a construction site compound and was therefore closed when the building was surveyed (September 2025). The nearest campus car park while the works are ongoing is the East Gate Car Park, located off Park Row at the eastern boundary of the Old Royal Naval College.

Reception (Main Building Reception - Security Desk)

  • The reception is located immediately to the left as you enter the building.
  • The distance from the entrance is 4m.
  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception desk is 113cm.
  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 74cm.
  • The reception has a television.
  • There is a portable hearing assistance system on request.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.

  • The heights of the touchscreen given are for the self-service book issuing machines. The scanner on these machines is at a height of 78cm. There are further self-service book return machines, which have a touchscreen with a height range between 119cm and 145cm. The scanner is 114cm high, and the book return slot is 95cm high. These touchscreens are equipped with adjustable font size and a call for assistance button.
  • This library is able to provide material in the following formats: ebook and ejournal.
  • Auxiliary aids available in this library include: large key keyboards, high visibility/contrast keyboards, ergonomic chairs, adjustable foot rests, handheld magnifiers and CCTV/video magnifiers.
  • There are security barriers to enter and exit the library, just beyond the main building reception - security desk. These barriers open automatically away from you after successfully tapping your library card on the reader. The barriers have a low colour contrast and an opening width of 91cm. The library card reader is at a height of 106cm. There are small lips on the thresholds of the barriers.

  • There is a lowered section at the desk.
  • The height of the lowered section is 75cm.
  • The reception has windows.
  • There is a clearly signed portable hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is background noise in this area which varies depending on the time of day.
  • The flooring is shiny.
  • Lighting levels vary due to the use of large glazed walls.

  • The steps are clearly marked and have handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are easy to grip.
  • The handrails cover the flight of stairs throughout its length.
  • The handrails extend horizontally beyond the first and last step.

  • The depth of the steps is between 30cm and 45cm.
