Summary

Main Entrance to Central Avenue

  • Enter the campus through the pedestrian access gate on the right hand side of Pembroke as you face the campus from the roundabout.
  • The path has an even block-paved surface.
  • The gate is permanently held open to a width of 150cm.
  • There is a slight slope leading up to the gate, followed by a steep slope immediately after the gate that soon evens out into a slight slope once again.
  • Continue straight ahead along the pavement, passing the directional signage and ignoring the crossing point over Pembroke to your right. The pavement then curves around in an arc to reach a crossing point over North Road, opposite Central Avenue.
  • Cross North Road via the crossing point. There are dropped kerbs on either side of the road with slight gradients and tactile paving. The road has a block paved surface and traffic is generally light.

Central Avenue to Security Gatehouse

  • Continue ahead on the path after the crossing, which follows a wall on the left as it swings around onto Central Avenue. The path here has a handrail on the left going up and a steep gradient.
  • Turn left onto Central Avenue. The path now has a slight uphill gradient and no handrail, and retains its block paved surface. There is a high wall on your left and street trees and bushes on your right, between the pavement and the road.
  • There are two crossing points over the in/out driveway to The Captain's House. Both have dropped kerbs with a slight gradient and tactile paving on either side of the roadway.
  • After the second crossing point, turn immediately right and then immediately left. The path here becomes narrow, with a minimum width of 70cm due to flower pots on the path. It also becomes level, and the surface changes to concrete.
  • The Security Gatehouse is now immediately to your left.
  • Just beyond the Security Gatehouse, the path surface changes to tarmac.

Central Avenue - Pembroke

  • After the Security Gatehouse, turn right and cross Central Avenue via the zebra crossing.
  • The crossing is humped, so brings the roadway flush to the pavement. There is no tactile paving on either side of the crossing, and the road has an even tarmac surface.
  • Turn left and head east along the pavement of Central Avenue.
  • The surface is tarmac and the gradient is level. There are street trees on the left hand side of the pavement, beside the roadway.
  • There is also directional signage for upper campus buildings on the pavement. The Pembroke Building is on your right.
  • Continue along Central Avenue. There is green space with benches on your right. This can be accessed via 5 unmarked steps without handrails, and a depth of 17cm.

Central Avenue - Blake

  • Continue along Central Avenue for approximately 40m until you reach the Blake Building. The pavement remains level, with an even tarmac surface, and street trees.
  • There is both on street and overhead signage for the Blake Building.
  • For step free access to the Blake Building, please use entrances from the car park which can be accessed via Cumberland Road.

Central Avenue - Nelson

  • Continue along Central Avenue for approximately another 50m until you reach the Nelson Building. Pavement specifications remain the same.
  • There is overhead and on street directional signage.
  • There are 5 unmarked, medium-height steps without handrails to access the side of the building.

Central Avenue - Anson

  • Continue along the pavement for approximately 25m until you reach a roadway leading out from a parking area. There is a crossing point over this roadway, which has dropped kerbs with tactile paving on either side, both of which have a steep gradient. The surface is tarmac.
  • Cross the roadway and continue for another circa 20m until you reach the Anson Building. Pavement specifications remain the same. There are 5 unmarked, medium-height steps without handrails to access the side of the building.

Crossing for Lifts to Lower Campus

  • If you wish to access the lower campus via the lifts, cross Central Avenue using the pedestrian crossing. If you wish to stay in the upper campus, skip to the next section.
  • The crossing is humped, so brings the roadway flush to the pavement. There is no tactile paving on either side of the crossing, and the road has an even tarmac surface.
  • Turn right on the far side of Central Avenue, and the lifts are on your left, approximately 40m ahead. Overhead wayfinding signage is provided along this section, and the pavement has a level tarmac surface, with a railing to the left and street trees to the right, beside the roadway.

Central Avenue - Grenville

  • Continue along the pavement for approximately 20m until you reach a roadway leading out from a parking area. There is a crossing point over this roadway, which has dropped kerbs with tactile paving on either side. The dropped kerb on the near side has a steep gradient, while the dropped kerb on the far side has a slight gradient. The surface is tarmac.
  • Cross the roadway and go straight ahead for another circa 15m. The Grenville Building is then on your right.
  • There is both on street and overhead directional signage for the building. Pavement specifications remain the same.
  • There are 5 unmarked, medium-height steps without handrails to access the side of the building.

Central Avenue - Wolfson

  • Continue along Central Avenue for another 115m and then turn right onto Upper East Road. The pavement here remains level with a smooth tarmac surface, but becomes narrower (yet still over 150cm wide). There is shortly a crossing point over a service road, which has a steep dropped kerb without tactile paving on the near side, and no dropped kerb on the far side. This can be bypassed by walking in the roadway, as the traffic is light, and the Wolfson Centre is accessed via the next turning on your right after 25m. If continuing on the pavement, there is no dropped kerb on the near side at the next crossing point, which is where you turn right through the gates into the yard in front of the Wolfson Centre.
  • Enter the yard and continue straight ahead for approximately 40m. The Wolfson Centre is on your right.
  • There are no pavements or pedestrian walkways inside the yard, so you must watch for vehicles. Signs are placed informing drivers and machine operatives of the need to watch for pedestrians. The yard has a level concrete surface (with very slight slopes in places).
